Andrew Felker Claims Six Feature Starts in POWRi Speedweek, Set for Indiana Midget Week Next!
Story by Walker Racing Promotions (Brittany Hull Photography)
Belleville, IL | June 9, 2015 – After a long four-race stand with POWRi Speedweek that saw six feature starts, three top tens, two podium finishes, and four heat race wins, Andrew Felker prepares for another busy tripleheader as he runs the final three events at USAC’s Indiana Midget Week. After closing out the third annual POWRi Speedweek with an impressive third place run at Macon and Belle-Clair, the Carl Junction, Missouri native looks to carry his momentum into this new week of action.
Starting the week off on Thursday night at Quincy Raceways in Quincy, Illinois, Felker was set for a dose of double duty at the ¼ mile. Along with his family-owned MelMark Pipe & Supply, BOSS/Stanton-Mopar No. 11A, Felker would also be piloting a Chad Bartosik owned Sawyer Chassis No. 23 in the micro sprint division at Quincy and Jacksonville.
The week kicked off as perfect as can be, as Felker stormed away to win heat races in both the midget and micro. Tough luck followed from there, however, as the team missed the gearing in the micro 20-lap feature and forced Felker to relinquish a strong top ten run as he pulled into the infield.
Rolling out in ninth for the 30-lap POWRi National Midget main, more tough luck followed right off the start. As the caution came out on lap two, a car from behind got into the back of Felker and sent his No. 11A flipping atop the track. Luckily, no major damage was received, but he was forced to the tail of the field on the restart. Again being forced to rally through the field, the 22-year old pulled off an amazing 22nd to sixth drive as he capped night one of Speedweek with a top ten run.
Moving onto Jacksonville Speedway on Friday night, much of the same luck followed him to the always-exciting ¼ mile. Felker would again take victories in both his midget and micro heat races and ensued to run third in his micro qualifier. After such a strong start to the night, things went south in the features, as a bad wiring harness in the midget and a flat right rear tire in the micro sent him to the pits in each race.
Returning to the site of his most recent POWRi National Midget win on Saturday night, Felker found plenty of confidence heading into a night of action at the Macon Speedway 1/5th mile. A third place heat run and a qualifier victory would land Felker and his Sixty-Six Truck & Foreign Salvage, Auto Xpress, Engler Machine & Tool No. 11A in the third spot for the main event. Facing difficult track conditions, much passing was hard to come by throughout the field, and Felker took the checkered flag where he started in the third position for a strong recovery.
The fourth and final night of POWRi Speedweek brought Felker to the fan favorite 1/5th mile of Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville, Illinois. After taking second in heat race action and third in his qualifier, the No. 11A found itself in the fourth feature of the week. Taking the green flag from seventh, Felker slowly made his way to the front by virtues of slidejob after slidejob. Running right on the wall with his Stanton SR11 Mopar powered BOSS Chassis, Felker was able to maneuver his way to the third spot as the final checkered flag of the week dropped.
While facing tough luck, mechanical issues, and nearly 60 other midgets, Felker still closed the weekend with an impressive average finish of 8.75. While taking a few days off, the 2012 POWRi Midget champion will return to the “Hoosier State” on Friday as he runs the USAC Indiana Midget Week event at Bloomington Speedway followed by Lawrenceburg Speedway on Saturday and Kokomo Speedway on Sunday.
Felker would like to thank Sixty-Six Truck & Foreign Salvage, Auto Xpress, MelMark Pipe & Supply, Stanton Racing Engines, CSI Shocks, Engler Machine & Tool, Momo’s Racing Engines, BOSS Chassis, Schluckebier Farms, Pro Powder Coating, All-Pro Auto Interiors, Aggressive Graphics, KBR Performance, Weld Wheels, Heath II, Wilwood, Bell Helmets, Rod End Supply, Midwest Sheet Metal, and Butler Built for their continued support.
