Henderson and Sandvig Racing Close Out Knoxville Season With Fifth-Place Finish in Championship Standings

Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 28, 2019) – Justin Henderson and Mike Sandvig Racing have enjoyed a successful inaugural season together.

The main focus has been weekly competition at Knoxville Raceway, which ended last Saturday with a 12th-place result. The team finished fifth in the 410ci winged sprint car championship standings.

“We were gaining a lot of momentum heading into the Nationals and we switched to a new car heading into there,” Henderson said. “We never quite got a hold on the new car and our performance showed accordingly.”

Looking to rebound from a disappointing Knoxville Nationals result, Henderson began last Saturday night by qualifying 14th quickest out of 27 cars with a best lap of 15.742 seconds. This placed the Tea, S.D., native on the outside front row of his heat race, which he won.

“Winning heat races is nice, but it was really more about track position than being really good,” he said. “We just were not quite as good as we needed to be going into the feature.”

Henderson, who started 12th in the A Main, dodged a three-car pileup on the opening lap and a late caution to finish where he started. The race was shortened to 20 laps as a result of incoming rain showers on the radar.

“I’m largely responsible for setups and I felt like I was just hanging on to it out there,” he said. “I didn’t really have a hang of things and I was just trying to bring it home in one piece.”

The finish was a disappointing end to a consistent season at the half mile oval, where the team qualified for 11 A Mains with five top 10s, a pair of top fives and a season-best finish of second that came in July.

While the team failed to crack the win column, Henderson feels good about the consistency of their maiden season together. He noted that he believes they grew as a team and if not for bad luck they would’ve had a chance to claim the championship.

“We unfortunately lost a spot in points the last night, but if it wasn’t for a crash early in the season I think we would’ve been right up front,” he said. “That crash really hurt our momentum early, but we learned a lot and we got better through the season. I can’t be too upset.”

With weekly racing at Knoxville Raceway coming to a close, Henderson and Sandvig are planning to compete in approximately 10 more races together as their schedules permit. Dates and locations will be announced later.
