Cole Wood – Jackson Charge!

(Bill W) July 7, 2014 – Just like with every race team, rain in the Midwest has cost the Cole Wood Racing #17w team a number of events. They were able to get two in last week, as the Auburn, California driver posted a pair of top tens in the Upper Midwest. His last was a charge from the tail of a 25-car field at the Jackson Spring Sprint Nationals in Minnesota on Thursday to an eighth place finish. The team plans on racing the 410 at both Knoxville Raceway in Iowa on Saturday at the Huset’s Speedway near Brandon, South Dakota Sunday.

On Sunday, June 29, the team competed with the 410’s at Huset’s and timed in sixth. “We struggled a little bit in hot laps,” says Cole. “We were stuck behind some guys, and things started a little slow. We came in and changed a bar in the back. We went back out for qualifying and it felt a lot better. Qualifying sixth puts you in a good spot for your heat race.”

Cole was able to move up in his heat, before registering a top ten finish in the main event. “We were able to get up to third, which was a good spot,” he says. “We were able to get into the feature invert. The car was good. The competition at Huset’s is very strong, so to come out of there with a top ten was something we could build on for Jackson on Thursday.”

The Jackson Spring Sprint Nationals drew a stout field of 360’s on Thursday in Jackson, Minnesota. Things started well, and Cole drove from fifth to third in his heat, earning a spot in the Dash. “We had a little trouble with the car leaning on the right rear,” he says. “We came in after the heat and talked it over with my crew chief Gary (Isom) and Brian (Brown) came over and helped us a little bit. That got us better for the Dash.”

Cole would start sixth in the Dash. “We were able to get up to fourth to start with, but we ended up finishing sixth,” he says. “Brown and (Danny) Lasoski got by me.”

Starting sixth, Cole would benefit immediately from the team’s feature setup. “We changed some things with the shocks before the feature,” he says. “I was able to get up to fourth. I got worn out on a slidejob by one of my racing buddies and we stopped. That put us restarting 25th.”

He would storm from the tail to an eighth place finish. “We were able to come back through to eighth,” says Cole. “The car was on a rail and we were going well. We were able to run through the top of three and four and get two or three cars at a time down there. It was a really good track.”
