Cole Wood – Up and Down in Moberly!

(Bill W) September 2, 2014 – Cole Wood had an up and down weekend at the Randolph County Raceway near Moberly, Missouri. The Auburn, California driver ended up on his lid in a rough night Saturday, but rebounded with some speed on Sunday. This week will find the Cole Wood Racing #17w team off before getting ready for upcoming midget action with the POWRi series.

Saturday night saw a DNF in the heat. Cole rebounded with a charge in the B main, however. “We had a coil wire get pinched and it was arching through the injection,” he says. “It was a pain. We changed the motor after the heat race, and the car was good in the B. We were able to go from the sixth row and finish second.”

Starting the main event 18th, he would end with another DNF. “We were rolling pretty nicely,” says Cole. “We got up to 14th or 15th. I was sliding Austin Alumbaugh through the middle and I caught a bump. I started bouncing and ended up on my head. It got the wing and that was about it.”

Cole would come back in Sunday’s finale with a strong heat race, charging from sixth to second. “We were able to get a couple of guys on the start,” he says. “I was able to pass a couple more during the race. The car was really good. We ended up as the high point man on the night, but then I drew the seven to start the feature, of course.”

Things were going well in the feature, and it looked like a top ten finish was in the offing, before a slide in the last few laps saw Cole checker 14th. “I was decent the first half of the race,” he says. “I lost a position to (Brian) Brown and one to Jason Johnson. I ran ninth seventeen of the 25 laps. It kept getting slicker and slicker in one and two, and it laid rubber in three and four. I was good in three and four and terrible in one and two. I think we had the car way too loose.”

Look for the team to return to action with the midget in Illinois on September 12 at the Jacksonville Speedway and at the “Tom Knowles Memorial” at the high-banked Spoon River Speedway south of Canton. “I’m going to take the week off and head back to California,” says Cole. “We’re going to come back next week and get ready for some midget action over in Illinois.”
