BRISBANE, Australia – Kicking off his season “down under,” Bellevue, Ohio native Cap Henry climbed aboard Dave and Jen Whell’s #USA23 car on Saturday night at Brisbane, Queensland’s Archerfield Speedway for Round 4 of the Supercheap Auto track championship series, hoping to continue the success that he had in the States this season, including two wins and 20 top-tens in 31 events.
The night’s competition started with each driver receiving two laps on the clock in qualifying. Henry’s lightning-fast second circuit, at 11.946 seconds around the quarter-mile Archerfield, qualified him fourth of 30 sprint cars in attendance.
The strong qualifying effort meant a starting spot at the back in the first round of heat races; the Maxim Chassis, Inglis-powered entry would grid in spot seven in the third of three heat races, picking off three cars in the ten-lapper to get to fourth. In the second set of heats, he would again start seventh in the final race, jumping up two spots to finish fifth.
Moving forward in both heats, combined with his excellent qualifying performance, was enough to earn him a spot for the six-car, six-lap dash event, which would set the first three rows of the 30-lap feature. The draw for dash lineup placed Henry on the outside of the front row, where he would finish after the race went green to checkered without interruption.
Starting second in the main event, the Toowoomba Car Wreckers machine piloted by Henry would fall to third before completing the first lap, where he’d run until two cars got together and went flipping in the first turn on lap three. Upon the restart, Henry would give up a position to fall to fourth, where he’d settle in for the next 20 laps. On lap 22, he capitalized on a mistake by the second-running car, briefly moving up to third. By this time, the handling on the car had begun to head south, however, and he’d surrender the third, fourth, and fifth spots on consecutive laps, with multi-time champions Robbie Farr, Dave Murcott, and Andrew Scheuerle being the drivers sneaking by, relegating Henry to sixth on lap 25. He’d close out the event laying down solid laps, finishing the race with just over a one-second buffer between himself and seventh place, and matching his career-best finish at the Brisbane facility.
Henry would like to thank Toowoomba Car Wreckers, Snap-On Tools, JCW Towing, Linear Graphics, S&S Genrich, Wilko’s, Downs Mini Digs, Tony Stewart Racing, Simpson Race Products, FK Rod Ends, Wings Unlimited, K&N Filters, and Keizer Wheels, as well as his family and crew for their continued support.
Henry is tentatively scheduled to compete on November 29 at Archerfield Speedway in Brisbane, QLD, for round 5 of the Supercheap Auto Championship series in the #USA23 V8 sprintcar entry.
