Bright Uses Late-Race Slide Job to Secure 11th Victory of Season
Inside Line Promotions – NEWMANSTOWN, Pa. (Aug. 31, 2014) – Alex Bright garnered his 11th triumph of the season in thrilling fashion on Sunday afternoon.
Bright, who was driving for Greg Stevens, captured the delayed winged micro sprint feature at Lanco Speedway with a late-race slide job.
The competition kicked off on Saturday night, when Bright powered from third to win his first heat race and he rallied from eighth to fifth place during the second heat. That put him eighth in overall points and earned a spot in a knockout qualifying segment, which lined up the first six rows for the main event.
After setting quick time in the first two rounds to advance, Bright was second quickest in the final session and he was slated to line up on the outside of the front row for the main event. However, the race was postponed until Sunday afternoon because of curfew.
“Our plan was to run the winged micro race because they started at 3 p.m. and then I was going to leave and go to Grandview Speedway (for the ARDC Midgets event), but that was cancelled in the morning,” he said.
The first half of the plan went according to schedule and Bright capitalized on the opportunity.
“(The polesitter) got the jump on the start,” he said. “He was running away from me in open ground, but I’d catch him in traffic. I was getting really good restarts. I challenged him a couple of times, but couldn’t pull it off. There was a caution with about three laps to go. I got a really good restart and did a big slide job going into turn one. He went to pull a slider on me in turn three, but I stayed on the gas and went around him.”
Bright led the final handful of laps en route to the victory.
Since the ARDC Midgets event was cancelled on Sunday night, Bright took advantage of a chance to drive a nonwing micro sprint for Brett Michalski at Lanco Speedway that evening.
Bright charged from ninth to finish second in the first heat race.
“I think I went from ninth to third in a lap and a half,” he said. “I got a good start, but at the same time there were some cars that got squirrely that I almost got into. I just squeezed by one or two cars.”
He then led the distance of his second heat race, which tied him with two other drivers for the most points. The knockout qualifying was cancelled because of impending weather so the tiebreaker was the pill draw. That lined Bright up on the inside of the second row for the main event.
Unfortunately, rain arrived while he was sitting in staging and officials deemed that the race couldn’t be completed before curfew so it was cancelled.
“It’s unfortunate it rained because we had a really good car and I thought I had a good shot at winning,” he said.
Bright is scheduled to be off next weekend before returning to competition on Sept. 12 with the ARDC Midgets at Grandview Speedway.
