Second place finish for impressive rookie Corey Hoover
On Track Inc - CORONA, Calif. (May 5th, 2014) - Impressive 15 year old rookie Corey Hoover continued his hot streak as the California Lightning Sprints rolled into Perris Auto Speedway for round 6 of the 18 race series in conjunction with the USAC CRA sprint cars. Corey was looking to continue his streak of top 5 finishes at the last two races. The historic half mile track was configured with a special "hybrid" inner banking for turns 1 & 2 for the CLS cars.
The day started off with some challenges as some confusion during the hot lap/qualifying session put Hoover behind a slower group which made it difficult to get a clean lap. He ended up qualifying in the 10th spot and would start 3rd in his heat race with the invert.
As the green flag dropped for the heat race, Corey passed the pole sitter and grabbed the lead. After finally getting a clean lap it was apparent that the gearing was incorrect. The car was hitting the rev limiter early which caused some oil to spew from the crankcase breathers. After a few laps the car started to lose power but Hoover was able to limp it home for a 4th place finish.
After a gear change it was time for the 20 lap main. Corey would start off-pole beside fellow rookie Cori Andrews who claimed the pole with an impressive 2nd place in her heat race. The green flag flew and the field stayed in line into the treacherous "hybrid" turn. At the exit of turn 2 the car of Andrews got loose and Hoover capitalized by diving low and grabbing the lead. He continued to stretch out his lead and it looked he was on his way to his first win. After 7 laps Corey began to encounter lapped traffic. As he was approaching a group of cars through turn 3, the 33 car spun on the inside and collected the 55 car. This caused a red flag and the cars would be bunched up for the restart. After the wreck was cleared Corey took the green flag and continued to lead, unfortunately another accident involving 4 cars forced another red flag condition. On the second restart Hoover led for a few laps before encountering a tight condition through turns 3 & 4. He finally gave up the lead to veteran Bobby Michnowicz and came home with a solid 2nd place finish. "I want to thank my family and friends for coming out to support me tonight. We struggled earlier in the day and I'm very happy with my finish tonight" said the rookie after the race.
