Jon Mitchell finishes 2023 with Gateway Dirt Nationals
A trip to St. Louis was on top for Jon Mitchell to close out the 2023 campaign. He was one of a staggering 127 Super Late Model competitors participating in the Gateway Dirt Nationals at The Dome at America’s Center, and he made his presence known throughout the weekend.
During preliminary action on Friday, Mitchell drove his W&W Timber No. 5 car to third in his heat race on the 1/5-mile track, one spot shy of an automatic transfer into the night’s 25-lap main event.
However, he looked on his way to making the show through the B-Feature before he was hit from behind coming to the checkered flag while running second on the last lap. As a result, he was relegated to a 14th-place finish and unable to advance to the $5,000-to-win feature.
On Saturday, Mitchell started 13th and finished sixth in his qualifier, bringing his event to a close before the 40-lap, $30,000-to-win finale.
During the 2023 campaign, Mitchell recorded five top-fives and 12 top-10 finishes.
