Mid Season Champions Crowned at Sandusky
(SANDUSKY, OHIO, Tuesday, July 12th, 2016) -- The Sandusky Speedway hosted its Mid Season Championships presented by Matthews Ford Saturday evening and hardnosed racing and points drama ensued. In the modified division, Kenny Sharp topped the weekly short track king by winning the feature en route to his mid season championship. Jerry Karl did the same in the sportsman division. In the Street Stock division, Mark Resor would score his fourth win of the season while Mike White would pick up the midseason championship. In the Hobby Stock division, Dan Smith would win the feature while Richard Clem would win the midseason championship.
The Melinda! Melinda! Hobby Stock division's fifteen lap feature was first up with Nick Wolfe and John Collins in the front row. Brandon Halcomb, Dan Smith and Richard Clem would rocket to the top three positions in turn one while Trent Aslaksen moved to the fifth position on lap two. Dan Smith passed Halcomb for the lead on theback straightaway on lap three. Aslaksen took the fourth position on the front straightaway on lap four while Clem would take the runner-up position on the back straightaway on the same lap. Nick Wolfe would spin John Collins in turn one on lap six, bringing out the sole caution of the event.
The restart came with Dan Smith leading Richard Clem, Brandon Halcomb, Trent Aslaksen, and John Collins. Clem would nearly pick off the win with a last lap turn four push but would come up short as Smith won over Clem, Halcomb, Aslaksen, and Collins. Nick Wolfe did not finish.
The Wolfpack Sportsman division's twenty lap feature would start with Randy Wedell and Joe Borczuch on the front row. Logan Cooper would make contact with Wedell in turn one and Wedell would spin. Borczuch and Cooper would restart on the front row but Jerry Karl would start his ascent to the front on lap three in turn one taking the second position while father Jeff Karl would follow him through in turn four for the third position. The Karl duo would move to the top two positions on lap eight in turn one.
A debris caution on lap twelve would slow the field with Jerry Karl leading Jeff Karl, Joe Borczuch, Logan Cooper, and Randy Wedell making up the top five for the restart. John Karl would take the fifth position from Wedell on the restart in turn one. Wedell would return the favor in turn one on lap fourteen but Karl would pass him back on lap sixteen in turn four. Wedell would spin on the back straightaway with two laps to go. Jerry Karl, Jeff Karl, Joe Borczuch, Logan Cooper, and John Karl would restart with two laps to go and Jerry Karl, Jeff Karl, Logan Cooper, Joe Borczuch, and John Karl would make up the finish. Randy Wedell and Rich Clingan did not finish.
Justin Hamilton and Jeremie Wiggins would start on the front row of the headliner modified division's twenty-five lap feature. Hamilton and Wiggins would make contact with Wiggins spinning in turn one and being hit by Ryan Cypher in the right side. Wiggins would retaliate as he headed into the pit area with a bump to the rear bumper of Justin Hamilton. Chris Hamilton and Jason Wells would take the top two positions on the restart. Logan Hamilton would move into the third position with one lap complete.
With five laps to go, Kenny Sharp would pass Logan Hamilton for the third position on the back straightaway. Jason Wells would break in turn two with four laps to go, causing Sharp and Joey Wyckoff to spin. The race would restart with Chris Hamilton leading Kenny Sharp, Logan Hamilton, Joey Wyckoff, Steven Drew, Justin Hamilton, and Ryan Winningham. Sharp would take the lead on the restart and Joey Wyckoff would take the third position. The race would end with Kenny Sharp winning over Chris Hamilton, Joey Wyckoff, Logan Hamilton, Steven Drew, Justin Hamilton, and Ryan Winningham. Jason Wells, Jason Drew, Ryan Cypher, and Jeremie Wiggins did not finish.
This Saturday, July 16th, 2016, modifieds will have a special $1000-to-win forty lap feature along with VROA Modifieds, sportsman, street stocks, hobby stocks, and the speedway's first ever chain race. The pit area will open at three o'clock with practice beginning at four. Qualifications will begin at 5:30 to set the fields for the racing action slated to begin at seven.
