Inside Line Promotions – BYRAM, Miss. (April 18, 2017) – Ray Allen Kulhanek showcased mixed results during a tripleheader weekend.
The action began last Thursday at Gator Motorplex in Willis, Texas, where Kulhanek drove a 305ci winged sprint car for Randy Allen. He advanced from fifth to third place in a heat race before maneuvering from 11th to fifth place in the main event.
“At the latter part of the race and especially when we were in traffic we were making up ground,” Kulhanek said. “We tried a little different setup and the balance of the car wasn’t quite where it needed to be. It was a good finish, but we expect to go out and contend for wins.”
Kulhanek returned to his team on Friday to open the King of the Wings doubleheader at Jackson Motor Speedway, where the ASCS Gulf South Region and ASCS Southern Outlaw Sprints co-sanctioned the event.
Kulhanek placed second in his heat race and made the feature redraw. He pulled the No. 4 to start the main event on the outside of the second row.
“Everybody was railing the top,” he said. “We were just as good, but we weren’t going anywhere so I started making the bottom work. I jumped into second and started running Brian (Bell) down. I was battling with him in lapped traffic. We had a legit shot to win. Late in the race we had a caution and took back off on the restart. I was racing hard with Michael Miller for second and I got punted coming out of turn four by another driver. We restarted at the back and passed five, six, seven cars to get to 11th with a green-white-checkered finish. I should have been in the top three and had a good enough car to win.”
Kulhanek rebounded from the incident to post an 11th-place finish.
The event concluded on Saturday when he picked up a position to finish fourth in a heat race. That started Kulhanek on the inside of the seventh row in the main event.
“The car came in way too late in the race,” he said. “We went back to where we were the night before. We were ok, but we weren’t great. We’ll have to work harder to get stuff like that figured out.”
Kulhanek drove from 13th to an eighth-place result, which was his fourth top 10 of the season. He continues to lead the ASCS Gulf South Region championship standings.
Kulhanek is scheduled to return to action May 5 at Heart O’ Texas Speedway in Waco, Texas, and May 6 at Gator Motorplex in Willis, Texas, with the ASCS Gulf South Region.
