Mallett Wins at Dixie Speedway for Sixth USCS Triumph of the Season
Inside Line Promotions – WOODSTOCK, Ga. (July 17, 2018) – Jordon Mallett added to his ever-growing win total last Saturday during USCS Series action, picking up a victory in the 10th annual Randy Helton Memorial presented by FireAde at Dixie Speedway.
It was the sixth win of the season for the native of Greenbrier, Ark., which matches the number of times he reached Victory Lane last year.
Mallett opened the night with a charge from fourth to second place in the dash before posting a win in a heat race. The reigning USCS champion lined up third in the 27-lap main event and took the lead just past the midpoint.
“In the heat race I was feeling things out to see if we could run up around the top or anywhere else to have some options,” he said. “We found a little glimpse of something and it worked. I jumped up top in the feature and got to second and then stalked the leader. I kept on his bumper, but tried not to give away what I was doing and was able to set him up and make the pass.”
The win was worth $2,727 and marked the second straight year Mallett has won the Randy Helton Memorial, though last year the event was held at East Alabama Motor Speedway.
“It’s definitely more special to win a memorial race than just a normal race,” he said. “We’ve run the race twice and won it twice. I’m glad we are able to do that for the Helton Family. It’s cool to honor their family more than once and to be able to celebrate the win with them is definitely special.”
On July 3, Mallett finished second at Lexington 104 Speedway in Lexington, Tenn., which was the only race of the three scheduled for the USCS that was not interrupted by Mother Nature during Independence Day week. He ran fourth in the dash and won a heat race before the podium result in the A Main. The runner-up finish was the best of his career at the track.
“We went into hot laps at Lexington with a little different setup that we normally do to try a few things,” he said. “We made some changes before the dash and then had a much better car in the heat race. Once you get strung out there, it’s tough to pass and everyone becomes the same speed. We never really got to lapped traffic to pass anyone so we rode around in second. We learned a lot and made a lot of improvements.”
This weekend Mallett will visit Carolina Speedway in Gastonia, N.C., on Friday and Lancaster Speedway in Lancaster, S.C., on Saturday with the USCS Series. The races are the first two rounds of the Third annual Joe and Jim McLain Summer Sprint Classic. Mallett won his first-career USCS race at Carolina Speedway in 2012.
“We are always really competitive at Carolina (Speedway),” he said. “That track holds a special place in my heart since I got my first win there. I really like how the track races. You can oftentimes run the top or the bottom and even the middle.
“Lancaster is the biggest track on the circuit. When you go to somewhere that drastically big, it’s more of a momentum game. You kind of learn how to work the car for momentum and minimize mistakes. If you make a mistake, you can’t rebound from it immediately. It takes several laps. You learn how to become mistake-less at a place like Lancaster.”
