Chase Viebrock Repeats at Hibbing Raceway

Chase Viebrock picked up where he left off last season at the Hibbing Raceway, as he returned to Victory Lane at the track where he recorded his first UMSS Traditional Sprint Car Series win. Viebrock led the first 12 laps before Jon Lewerer moved by on the bottom lane to lead the next six circuits. Viebrock stuck to the cushion, and it paid off for the young New Richmond, Wisconsin racer. Viebrock retook the lead and went on to record his second feature win of the season to kick off the annual Northern Tour for the non-winged sprints. The event drew a strong field of 17 cars and some fantastic weather to boot.

Lewerer and two-time series champion Rob Caho, Jr. won the heat races. Lewerer, in his second season behind the wheel of a non-winged sprint car, earned the most passing and finishing points and drew the outside front row starting spot. Viebrock's luck was very good, as he drew the pole position. Jimmy Kouba and Caho started in the second row of the 25 lap feature.

The feature race was just two laps old when the lone caution flag flew for a spin in turn four. The final 23 laps went nonstop. Viebrock had run the first couple of laps on the bottom. With Caho moving quickly around the top, Viebrock headed to the cushion just in the nick of time to get in front of Caho on lap 6. Several laps later, Caho would slip over the berm in turns 3-4 and find himself running deep in the field. Lewerer got stronger on the bottom as the laps clicked off and soon was contending for the lead. On lap 13, Lewerer took the top spot. Viebrock regained the lead on lap 19 and the eventual victory. A pair of Koubas finished third and fourth with Jake topping his dad Jimmy. Jimmy Kouba was coming off his first career TSCS win the night before at St. Croix Valley Raceway just like Jake had done last year when the series headed north. Mike Mueller rounded out the top five finishers. All sixteen cars that started the feature finished. Brian VanMeveren was the only car unable to start the feature, as they chased mechanical issues all night long.

The Traditional sprints then headed south to the Proctor Speedway on Sunday June 14 to complete their three race weekend and double-header Northern Tour.
