Two For Two on Northern Tour, as Chase Viebrock Wins at Proctor
Chase Viebrock completed his double-header Northern Tour sweep by winning at the Proctor Speedway on Sunday night June 14. Viebrock inherited the lead following a caution with 8 laps scored when race leader Brian VanMeveren did a 360 spin in turn 1. Under UMSS rules, VanMeveren headed pit side. Viebrock led the final 17 circuits for his third win of the season and first at Proctor. Viebrock capped off a very successful two days in the Northland with a celebration in Victory Lane. As the wonderful weather continued, another 17 car field was on hand at Proctor.
Heat race wins went to Jimmy Kouba and Mike Mueller. Johnny Parsons III had the most passing and finishing points and drew the pole starting spot with Reactor Racing teammate Brian VanMeveren to his outside. Rookie driver James Giossi started third with Viebrock fourth for the 25 lap feature event.
VanMeveren charged to the early lead over Parsons. The first caution flew for a spin in turn 4 with five laps scored. VanMeveren was strong up front on the restart, but three laps later his night would come to an end. Viebrock had worked past Parsons for second on lap 7 and found himself as the new leader when the race went green again. Three more laps were scored before the third and final caution slowed the pace when Parsons spun in turn 3 while running third. Viebrock led the remaining 14 lap sprint to the checkers. Mike Mueller stayed close in second during this run but could not make a serious bid to overtake Viebrock. Jimmy Kouba turned in another solid performance with a third place finish. Giossi recorded his best finish in just his sixth race in a non-winged sprint car, as "Nitro" rode home in fourth. Jake Kouba completed the top five. Two-time series champion Rob Caho, Jr. had a night he would rather forget, as his car would not fire for the heat race or the feature event.
The Traditional sprints return to their home track for the next three Friday nights before venturing down the road a bit to the Cedar Lake Speedway on July 10-11.
