Brian Brown – Nebraska Cup and MOWA Win Reap $8,000!
Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 brought home two wins last weekend. That brings the season total to a dozen heading into this weekend’s events with the World of Outlaws at the Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer, Iowa and the Deer Creek Speedway near Spring Valley, Minnesota. The Grain Valley, Missouri driver was able to win the $3,000 MOWA event at the 34 Raceway near West Burlington, Iowa last Saturday, and take home the $5,000 Nebraska Cup at Eagle Raceway Sunday.
It sure was wet at Burlington early in the night on Friday.
It was uncharacteristic of Burlington. Usually, it’s ready to race when you hit hot laps. It seemed like it was just water sitting on top of the track. It wasn’t rough. Luckily, the officials made sure it was safe and ready for qualifying and gave us a couple extra sessions.
You came out 19th, but still managed to set quick time.
I think (the track) got better as it went. Even when I qualified, I was still slipping and sliding. We were able to get quick time. It didn’t do a lot for us though. We had to go from fourth to get in the top two in the heat.
You were able to get in the Dash by running second in the heat.
We had one of the tougher heats, I felt. I was able to sneak around (Paul) Nienhiser there on the outside going into turn one. We didn’t feel that great in the heat. We didn’t feel that good in the Dash either, where we went from fourth to second.
Obviously, you made the car better for the feature.
We made some wholesale changes. We seemed to land on something for the feature. (Pole-sitter and early leader) Ben Wagoner was setting a really good pace. I made a couple runs at him, but I wasn’t able to clear him. I settled in and figured I’d wait for traffic and see how it played out.
That’s when you made your move for the lead.
Ben went one way and I went the other. We were able to sneak by, and from that point on, I had a car I could put anywhere I wanted to on the track. As a driver, that’s all you can ask for. It was a good win. Anytime you can win with the competition in the MOWA series, it’s definitely good.
You’ve struggled a bit over the years at Eagle.
Eagle has been a place that puts on some good big races, especially the Nebraska Cup. It’s one of the four or five most prestigious 360 races in the country. It’s a great event. What excited us about going this year, was we were able to start 18th and run second last year.
Of course, you drew in row four of the heat. Your draws are not good at Eagle, historically.
We never seem to draw well and the heats were pretty narrow. We were able to go from seventh to fourth and that put us in the redraw. They had a neat thing where the kids came down and did a musical chairs for that. I had a good little youngster that did a good job and got me the fourth starting spot. I felt at that point we had a good opportunity to win.
…and you led every lap.
It took four or five starts, but the last one finally went. I think we passed Jay Russell for the lead in three and four on the first lap and got the lead. It was kind of like Burlington…I could put my car anywhere I needed to put it.
Did you have any doubts that you could pull it off?
There was a yellow with about nine to go, and Jack Dover lined up right behind us. He’s kind of the man around there, especially at Eagle. I was a little nervous. I really had to get going on my starts. The cushion kept getting bigger and bigger. Sometimes, you can get balled up on accident. I knew if we could just get going…as good as our car was, it was going to be tough for him to get by.
You were able to hold him off.
He showed me his nose a couple of times, but we were able to get away and get the win. It was a big win for us, especially going to a place we don’t run a whole lot. It just shows what a good team can do. Chad Morgan and Zac Thomas got us from Burlington to Eagle and got all the work done. I let Chad do his own deal on Sunday night, and I just kind of drove. I usually like to have input, but he did kind of what we did last year, and it worked out. Heather (Brown) was the best mud scraper in the pits all week long. That’s important too.
I know you have a lot of confidence in your equipment.
I can’t say enough about our cars. Our Maxim chassis were flawless all weekend long. Charlie Garrett with our 410 and Jaymie Moyle with our 360 had our engines rolling well.
That’s three wins in a row now.
With the momentum we have now, I’m just really looking forward to going to Spencer and Deer Creek. I feel our confidence is high again, but the Outlaws are good at bursting bubbles. We need to qualify in well, and have a solid couple of nights.

This is the second time this year that Brian has posted three straight wins. He picked up three wins in a row at Knoxville (two in 410 and one in 360) in May. He picked up four wins in a row back in 2012 between July 20 and 27. He won that year in Fairmont, Minnesota, doubled up in 360 and 410 action the next night at Knoxville and followed that up with the Mary Lee Standridge Memorial in Jacksonville, Illinois.
