Double Down: Mat Williamson Sweeps STSS Week, Earns $10,000 at Mohawk

HOGANSBURG, NY – Double down.

For the second time in as many days, Mat Williamson outdistanced the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco field, this time at Mohawk International Raceway in Hogansburg, N.Y.

The Saint Catharines, Ont., driver earned $10,000 for his efforts in the ‘Summer Showdown on the Border’ for the HYTORC of New York STSS Modified North Region.

Williamson was again at the controls of his self-owned No. 6, capping a $15,051 week with the series in the North Country.

‘Money Mat’ now boasts nine Short Track Super Series victories, fifth on the all-time win list.

Williamson started fourth following the Beyea Custom Headers Redraw as Jackson Gill took full advantage of his pole position to take the lead at the outset of the 50-lap main.

Williamson chased Gill through lap 20, when he swept around the outside to take a lead he would not relinquish.

The 50-lap main ran entirely caution-free on a wide and racy Mohawk oval. Williamson negotiated lapped traffic flawlessly for the 10k payday.

“I don’t know if Jackson (Gill) was right there,” Williamson said. “He had a really good car. It took me a while to catch him and get by him.

“We’ve never had the opportunity to race this ‘6 car’ on the series before. We’ve won a lot of these races, just never back-to-back, so that’s pretty cool.”

Gill, of Alexandria Bay, N.Y., earned his career best STSS finish with a big-block-powered No. 60 Troyer car, receiving $5,000 for his runner-up finish.

“It’s always an honor to race around a group of guys like this,” Gill said. “We always have fun racing with the Short Track Super Series.

“I had no brakes in the heat race. We found a caliper out in the dumpster and put it on the car. It held up pretty good. I had brakes the whole race.

“Lapped traffic was a little hard for me because my car was a little tight. Hats off to Mat. He’s been solid all year. I know Matt Sheppard was knocking on my door a few times.”

Matt Sheppard of Savannah, N.Y., started and finished third, completing the podium, followed by Saint-Damase, Quebec’s David Hebert, who started ninth, and 12th-starter Chris Raabe of Alexandria, Ont.

Finishing sixth through 10th, respectively, were Quebec’s Michael Parent, who started 11th; Tim Fuller of Edwards, N.Y.; Felix Roy of Napierville, Quebec; Zach Payne of Stanley, N.Y.; and 16th-starter Jack Lehner of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Raabe was the ATL Fuel Cells Hot Lap Hero with a lap of 15.136 seconds.

Heat winners were Payne, Hebert and Sheppard.

Lake Ariel, Pa.’s Tyler Peet picked up a $2,000 payday in the accompanying 35-lap STSS Sportsman Madsen Overhead Doors Inc. Sportsman main event, Peet’s second career victory with the series. Peet’s first win took place at N.Y.’s Fonda Speedway on July 2.

Peet started seventh in a caution-free feature and swept past a lead battle including local driver Joshua Jock and fellow Keystone State talent Garrett Chillot.

Peet drove away from Jock, whose second-place run netted him $1,000. Joe Toth of Upper Makefield, Pa., climbed from 13th to finish third, followed by Chillot and Quebec’s Donovan Lussier with his own advance after starting 12th following the Beyea Custom Headers Redraw.

Dylan Madsen was the JLR Technologies Hot Lap Hero turning 17.099 seconds.

Heat wins went to Marc Oliver McCarthy, Brennan Moore, Tyler Peet and David Hackett. B-Main victors were Keegan Nier and Sean Imbeault.

A field of 38 STSS Sportsman signed in for competition.

Racing resumes for the series on Thursday, August 21 at N.J.’s New Egypt Speedway with the twice-rescheduled ‘Dirty Jersey’ event for the NJ Quality Drywall South Region Modifieds (50 laps, $6,000 to win) and Belmont’s Garage South Region Sportsman (25 laps, $1,500 to win) plus the Four Cylinders.
