Brady Bacon – Six Down, Midget Week to Go!

(Bill W) May 31, 2016 – Brady Bacon competed in six races in six nights, and starting tonight, has six more in as many nights planned. Last week, the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver competed with the USAC National Sprint Car Series, USA Silver Crown Series, All Star Circuit of Champions, Fremont Speedway, BOSS Series and the World of Outlaws. Starting tonight, USAC’s Indiana Midget Week kicks off and runs through Sunday. Brady will mix in a sprint appearance to his busy schedule as well.

Things started last Wednesday at the Tony Hulman Classic for the USAC sprints at the Terre Haute Action Track in Indiana. Brady notched quick time before surging from sixth to third in his heat and starting sixth in the feature in the Hoffman Racing #69. “We were running well,” he says. “Unfortunately, a left front torsion arm came off halfway through the race. We kind of held on after that. We were fortunate to have as good a finish as we had with those problems. The car was good, and it’s too bad we couldn’t see how well we could have done, but we will take fourth with the problems we had.”

It was on to the Indiana State Fairgrounds on Thursday for the USAC Silver Crown “Hoosier Hundred” in the Paul Martens #48. “We had some problems in hot laps and had to change a clutch,” says Brady. “The first lap we did have on the track was quick time, which was pretty cool. We led for a little while (25 laps), and it seemed like the other guys were going a little too hard. We fell back to about sixth. We had a red with 35 to go, and my stuff was in a lot better shape than everyone else. I started going for it after that, and we had another clutch problem. It was too bad. I think we had a chance for the podium, or even a shot at the win. The car has been really good this year. The unfortunate part of Silver Crown is, you don’t have many chances to get out there. One race is a big chunk of your season.”

Brady towed his own #99 to Attica Raceway Park in Ohio Friday night with the All Stars. After qualifying with quick time in his group, and second overall, he finished third in his heat and second in the Dash. He started the main event outside row one. “We ran around third there for fifteen or twenty laps,” he says. “We fell back to around sixth and ran over the cushion in turn four with about three to go. We got into the fence and that ended the night. Things just didn’t go our way in that feature. We seemed to always be in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Fremont Speedway was up next Saturday night. He would qualify seventh quick and go from fifth to third in his heat. He started the feature seventh. “We were better at Fremont than we’ve ever been,” says Brady. “We were actually too tight in the feature, and that has never happened. We were rolling well in the feature. We were able to pass for second and the lead, but the yellow came out and put us back. I got a little too tight after the yellow. I was right on second pressuring, but I never had the chance to get all the way by him. We were definitely happy with our third place finish at Fremont though.”

Brady stayed in Fremont for Sunday’s non-wing BOSS event. “We had some steering issues,” he says. “We actually had to change it out twice. We qualified with no power steering. We were still able to qualify second in our group and won the heat. We ended up finishing fourth in the Dash. We were able to get to third in the feature. We were pretty decent. The cushion was big and nasty in turn four, and it ended up getting me. I caught it right after a restart and slipped off. We fell back to seventh, and we ended up coming back to finish sixth.”

Last night, the team headed to Lawrenceburg to compete with the WoO. “We had a good car in qualifying (12th quick),” says Brady. “We had it mashed to the floor and that’s all she had. We started 16th in the feature. I missed the bottom on one of the restarts and got hung out in the middle. We were passed by five or six cars. Once we got going on the top, we got back up through there and finished eleventh. We were right there with the top ten at the end. We felt good about how we finished considering how far back we fell. The wing car has really been performing well this year.”

Brady is ready for Indiana Midget week aboard Frank Manafort’s #76m machine. It all begins tonight at Montpelier Motor Speedway, where he won earlier this season with the USAC sprints. On Wednesday, Gas City will be the venue, followed by Putnamville on Thursday, Bloomington Friday, Lawrenceburg Saturday and Kokomo on Sunday. Brady tentatively plans on running the sprint tonight and tomorrow night as well.
