Brady Bacon – Atop the USAC Heap with Two Second Place Finishes!

(Bill W) May 23, 2016 – Brady Bacon and the Hoffman Racing #69 team are on quite a roll in the USAC National Sprint Car Series right now. The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver has posted three second place finishes in a row in USAC competition, and has finished in the top five, five straight times and in six out of the last seven outings. All that has him atop the standings as he heads into a busy week to say the least. The USAC National Sprint Cars will be at the Terre Haute Action Track for the “Tony Hulman Classic” Wednesday. Brady will be in the Paul Martens #48 for the USAC Silver Crown “Hoosier Hundred” at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis Thursday. He will switch to winged racing in his own #99 Friday and Saturday at Attica Raceway Park and Fremont Speedway in Ohio before returning to Indiana’s Lawrenceburg Speedway to run with the World of Outlaws Monday. Next Tuesday starts Indiana Midget Week in the Frank Manafort Racing #76M.

Things started last weekend in Gas City, Indiana Friday. Brady would time in sixth quick. “We drew a really late number, and still managed to time into the top six,” he says. “We had a scare in the heat race. We were running fifth. There was one car that was kind of a roadblock for everyone. I tried to go around the outside, and the car ended up drifting up there. I spun out and had to go to the back with five laps to go. We managed to make it up to the last transfer spot.”

Sneaking into fourth in the heat meant starting outside row one for the feature. “We were able to get out to the lead,” says Brady. “About halfway through, we moved up to the top. I felt my car going away a little on the bottom. We fell back to second for a couple of laps, and then got some momentum going back around the top. We were able to get back to the lead and stretch it out a bit.”

Lapped traffic would play a factor, however. “With about three laps to go, we caught a lapped car,” says Brady. “He was running the top behind everyone else. That’s where I needed to be. He had been running the bottom until I caught him. I tried to run under him through the middle in the corner and didn’t make it. I had to run the middle in the next corner, and that slowed me down enough to let Scotty Weir get beside me and pass me in one and two. When I finally got by the lapped car, there was one lap to go and it was too late to get back to the front.”

Brady would time in eighth quick Saturday at Brownstown Speedway. “We have our car better for the features, so we’ve been trying to compromise them to qualify a little better,” he says of the #69 team. “We were able to make it through the heat o.k. (third).”

Starting the main event eighth, he wasted little time in charging forward. “We got up through there pretty quickly, but by the time we got to second, the leader (Kevin Thomas Jr.) was too far gone,” says Brady. “Most of the guys we were passing were running the top, and we were good anywhere. We were catching the leader at the end running the bottom, but he really had too big of a lead. It was unfortunate once again, but if you put yourself starting back where we did, you can’t complain much. We’ll work on our qualifying a little more, and hopefully, next time we’ll start within striking distance.”

The second place finishes allowed Brady to take the AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car Series point lead. “The cars been good all the way back through Bloomington really,” he says. “We’ve been knocking on the door every night. Maybe the only chance we didn’t have to win was at Haubstadt, but it seems we’re good there one time, and not the next. We’ll get it figured out. We’re going into some big weeks coming up with the ‘Eastern Storm’ and ‘Indiana Sprintweek’ after that. We have a lot of speed right now, so we’re looking forward to it.”
