Canyon Speedway Park Season Opener on Saturday!
With the “pre-season” events logged into the books, Canyon Speedway Park officially kicks off the 2016 season with Saturday night’s season-opening event that features the winged Sprint Cars of the ASCS Southwest Region atop the 1/3-mile clay oval.
Following an open practice on Friday night from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., the ASCS Southwest Sprint Cars will be joined on Saturday’s card by a full slate of Arizona Differential IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Hobby Stocks vs. Renegades presented by Scottsdale Muffler & Automotive, Dwarf Cars and Micro Sprints.
Saturday’s season opener that fires off at 7:00 p.m. marks the first of three ASCS Southwest stops at Canyon Speedway Park in 2016.
After South Dakota’s Dusty Zomer topped last year’s March event at CSP, eight-time and reigning ASCS Southwest champion Rick Ziehl of Las Cruces, NM, reached victory lane in April before Glendale’s Bob Ream, Jr., picked off the win in August.
Ream, Jr., is second in points after running second to Washington native Logan Forler in the series recent season opener at Arizona Speedway. James Mosher, J.T. Imperial and Wes Wofford round out the current top five with wingless ace R.J. Johnson sixth in the winged points. Ziehl is currently tenth.
While Garrett Funk reigns as defending Arizona Differential IMCA Modified track champion, Ricky Thornton, Jr., has been dominant in early 2016 action at CSP with three of five wins in Winter Challenge competition before claiming the $5,000 Desert Classic title two weekends ago.
Capturing the most recent IMCA Hobby Stock vs. Renegades presented by Scottsdale Muffler & Automotive feature event during Desert Classic action on February 27, Richard Bennett is out to the early points lead with a six point advantage over Jason Crowe with Merle Zachrison another three points back in third.
Colton Hardy and Jarrett Martin have both already posted a pair of Micro Sprint wins at CSP thus far in 2016 while the Dwarf Cars have offered four different winners in as many events with Ed Schule the most recent winner on February 27.
Tickets for Saturday’s CSP Season Opener are just $16, with a $3 discount for Military, Seniors and Students. Children ages 7-12 are $6, with children 6 and under admitted free. VIP passes are available for $20.
