Inside Line Promotions – COLUMBUS, Ohio (June 21, 2016) – Kevin Mingus knows a win is coming in his Brandon Oakley Racing late model. He just needs to qualify better and get a little luck on his side.

Mingus qualified 13th quickest out of 19 competitors last Saturday at Columbus Motor Speedway. He made a last-lap pass to win his heat race, but the poor qualifying time relegated him to a 13th starting spot in the feature.

“I’ve never been a good qualifier,” he said. “I’m better on long runs and with competition on the track.”

Mingus quickly worked his way up to sixth within the first seven laps and after a couple of cautions he was soon sitting fifth.

“I was in a train of three cars battling and a car shoved up the track and I snuck under him and we got door to door,” he said. “I don’t know what happened, but he slammed into me hard and spun me into the infield and they sent me to the tail.”

Mingus restarted 13th. A couple of cars got together on the restart and he was able to move to 11th.

“I was mad,” he said. “I had a little incentive so to speak. I just put the hammer down and drove the outside line, which this car has been great at. I just ran out of time and ended up seventh.

“I know we have a car capable of winning. I just have to qualify better and put us in a position to win and not be back where trouble seems to happen a lot.”

The late models are off this weekend at Columbus Motor Speedway so Mingus will be back behind the wheel of his Huber Racing 305ci sprint car on the dirt Saturday at Fremont Speedway in Fremont, Ohio.

“It’s been a couple of weeks since I was in the sprint car,” he said. “I can’t wait. We’ve made two features at Fremont and we get better and better each week.”

“When I first started racing go-karts at like 11 or 12 years old Gus was like a grandfather to me,” Mingus said. “He took me under his wing and helped me develop as a racer. He helped my learning curve not only on the track but as a professional so that I wasn’t just some kid in a go-kart. He gave me a DDS – Dedication, Determination, Self-confidence … something every racer needs.”
