Inside Line Promotions – COLUMBUS, Ohio (Aug. 9, 2016) – Kevin Mingus battled a very tight race car last Saturday at Columbus Motor Speedway. Yet he was able to score another top-five finish in his late model and keep his championship hopes alive.

Mingus, who had opened the night by qualifying eighth quickest, started third in the main event. He battled inside the top five throughout the race before posting a fifth-place result. It was his fourth top five of the season.

“I started third and kind of hung around there for the first part of the race,” he said. “But after every caution, there were like four or five cautions, for some reason the car would get tight. It just kept getting tighter and tighter. But we were able to hang on for a fifth-place finish. Mathematically we are still in the championship hunt, but I’m more hungry to get feature wins and let the points fall where they may.”

Like everyone in the racing world, Mingus said he is more focused on supporting the friends and family of Bryan Clauson. Clauson died from injuries sustained in a midget race last weekend.

“I was almost part of the same driver development program as Bryan,” Mingus said. “I got to spend a lot of time around him and his dad, Tim. Just a great family. We all understand the risk we take when we strap in, but that doesn’t make this loss any easier.”

On the dirt side, Mingus hopes the engine woes the Huber Motorsports 305ci sprint car recently experienced are fixed.

“We found some issues in the fueling system and I think Kurt (Huber) has got it all ironed out,” he said. “I can’t wait to get back on the dirt next week.”

Next up for Mingus is a return to Columbus Motor Speedway this Saturday.

“The loss of Bryan just can’t be measured,” Mingus said. “As good of a race car driver as he was, he was an even better person. He was always upbeat and always had a smile on his face and always made time for the fans. He taught me what a true racer really is.”
