Cottage Grove, Oregon- Cottage Grove Speedway hosted their fourth race of the 2020 season on Saturday, August 8th. Over one-hundred-twenty cars were in attendance spread across six different divisions. The classes on the card included Limited Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, Late Models, IMCA Sport Mods, Street Stocks, and IMCA Sport Compacts.

In the Limited Sprint feature, Tyler Thompson, from Harrisburg, took control of the lead right off the bat on the opening lap. Thompson set a quick pace and had only four cautions to slow him down. Coming across the start-finish line Tyler Thompson captured his first main event victory of 2020. Cottage Grove’s Kinzer Cox was second followed by Jake Wheeler, of Central Point, in third. Fourth and fifth went to Roseburg racer Steven Snawder and Shane Forte, from Junction City.

In the IMCA Modifieds, a similar theme took place.
Cottage Grove veteran Curtis Towns seized the initiative on the opening start and captured the top spot. Towns was briefly passed on lap two but it was negated due to a caution giving the lead back to Curtis. Curtis Towns paced the field the rest of the distance to collect his first triumph of the current campaign. Keizer’s John Campos was second with Otis teenager Eston Whisler placing third.
Albany’s Bricen James and Steven Sturdevant, of Springfield, round up the top five finishers. Chad Groves, from Bend, won the consolation feature.

Eston Whisler was a busy individual performing double duty on the night. Whisler made his Late Model debut and it proved to be a successful one. Eston got to the front on the eleventh circuit and retained the position the rest of the way for his first victory in the division.
McLain Beaudoin, from Lebanon, was credited with second while third went to Coos Bay’s Preston Luckman. Brian Smith, now residing in Lebanon and running for car owners Jerry and Mandee Casey, ended the evening in fourth while Cottage Grove chauffeur Mike Peters was an impressive fifth.

Despite six stoppages in the IMCA Sport Mod feature, Hunter Bloom once again took care of business. The Eugene driver seized the initiative on the opening start and blazed the trail for all twenty-five laps to score his second win of the season in the class. Austin Petray, of Medford, getting the runner-up position with Brookings resident Isaac Sanders placing third. Steven Sanders, also of Brooking, came across the wire in fourth over fifth finishing Molalla pilot Travis Pruitt. Springfield driver Shaun Hand won the evening’s consolation feature.

Creswell’s Graig Osborne made a daring pass for the lead on the twelfth circuit of the Street Stock feature. Osborne had made a nice recovery after getting caught up in a lap two incident earlier in the main. Graig had no issues once out in front and stayed in front of the rest of the competition to get his first win at CGS in 2020. Justin Evans, out of Lebanon and running for co-car owner Al Flora, posted a second-place result with third going to Gresham’s Mikey Long. Marc Farrar, from Sherwood, took home fourth followed by Forest Grove driver Joey Tardio.

Lastly, in the IMCA Sport Compacts, it was practically all about Burnie Bryant. The Sutherlin driver made the decisive lead on the third circuit and remained there in the caution-free feature. Bryant is the fourth different winner in as many races in the class. Ryan Dickenson, from Roseburg, and Dexter’s Barry Cannon were second and third. Brad Moffett, of Eugene, wound up fourth with fifth going to Jason Loucks, also from Eugene.

Cottage Grove Speedway is scheduled to return to racing on Friday, August 21st for the Kage Karts for their third race of the year. Then the ¼-mile will get things going on Saturday, the 22nd. As of right now, the classes scheduled to race are the Late Models, IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Mods, Street Stocks, and IMCA Sport Compacts.
