Wheeler, Mayden, Augustine, R. Bloom, Swaim, Moffett, And Pope Earn October 3rd Victories At CGS

Cottage Grove, Oregon- For the first time since 2017, Cottage Grove Speedway would compete in the month of October. Saturday, the 3rd, had seven classes converge on the historic ¼-mile for the tenth race of the 2020 season. Divisions included Limited Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, Late Models, IMCA Sport Mods, Street Stocks, IMCA Sport Compacts, and a special appearance by Dwarf Cars.

In the Limited Sprint division, Jared Hood was the early race leader in the main event. The Grants Pass pilot held down the top spot until being overtaken shortly after a restart on the fifth trip around the track. Jesse Schlotfeldt, making the journey all the way from Arlington, Washington, was the new driver to reign supreme.

Schlotfeldt held on to the coveted position for a bit of time before Jake Wheeler got around him on lap thirteen. Wheeler, of Central Point, was not away scot free just quite yet as Schlotfeldt regained first place on the fifteenth circuit. Wheeler would once more make the pass to get to the front on lap eighteen.

Jake Wheeler led the rest of the race with no issues to go on to win his first race of the season. He is the seventh driver to capture a victory in the Limiteds at CGS in 2020. Jesse Schlotfeldt was scored second while Jared Hood ended the night in third. The rest of the top five finishers would be Thurston’s Ricky Ashley and R.J. McGahuey, of Grants Pass, in fourth and fifth place.

Dan Sheller, from Oregon City, took charge of the field in the opening stages of the IMCA Modified feature. Creswell’s Paul Culp would pass Sheller the second time around the flagpole to become the new leader. Culp kept his car in front of the pack until he was passed on lap eight.

Jake Mayden, of Springfield, was the one to overtake Culp for the point. Mayden went unchallenged the balance of the distance to score his second win at Cottage Grove this year and his third triumph overall. It was the first time since July 18th that Jake had parked his mount in victory lane.

Brian Smith, of Lebanon and running a Sport Mod, was the runner-up over third finishing Paul Culp. Paul Rea, of Eugene, wound up fourth and Hornbrook, California traveler, Duane Orsburn, was fifth.

Nathan Augustine dominated the Late Model scene come main event time. The La Pine racer took control of the front at the drop of the first green flag and remained there the entire time. He did have a brief challenge with Sweet Home’s Kye Frick after a late race caution but managed to keep him in check. Augustine is only the fifth different Late Model driver to best the field this season.

Kye Frick was a close second with third going to Lebanon veteran Randy Boyd, in the Jerry and Mandee Casey owned entry. Chuck Christian, of Eugene, placed fourth while the other Jerry and Mandee Casey machine, driven by Lebanon’s Jeff Rash, ended the evening fifth.

K.C. Scott, from Springfield, showed the way early in the IMCA Sport Mod main event. Creswell’s Ray Bloom would pass Scott on the second lap to obtain the race lead. Bloom would remain there for the rest of the distance despite several restarts and a few challenges from behind.

With the victory Bloom is the eighth driver to tame the field at “The Grove” in the current campaign. It is also his second straight win after earning his first career Sport Mod victory at Coos Bay Speedway the weekend before. Brian Smith was a valiant second with third going to K.C. Scott. Veneta youngster Gavin Ropchan ended the race in fourth place over fifth finishing Aaron Bloom, from Cottage Grove, and running his brother Dalton’s car.

The Street Stocks had a wild and crazy feature. Joshua Linville, in his Street Stock debut, was the leader from the start. Unfortunately, the Veneta veteran got caught up in an incident on the second circuit. That would hand the lead over to Taunton Swaim, from Dexter.

Swaim, the decorated Hornet racer, held on to the top spot for quite a while. He would be under constant pressure for much of the time of his reign of first place. Both Adam Applebee, of Eugene, and Redmond’s Dillon Solum were the ones hot on his heels.

Applebee would pass Swaim coming to the white, but a couple of the front runners got together resulting in both Applebee and Solum out of the contest. Taunton Swaim maintained the race lead for the ensuing green-white-checkered finish. Swaim held on to win the main in his first career Street Stock start and is the seventh driver to conquer the field this season.

Blake Lehman, of Redmond, hit the finishing line in second with third being credited to Cottage Grove’s Eric Freeman. Anthony Prather, from Keizer, got fourth while recovering to finish fifth was Joshua Linville.

In the IMCA Sport Compacts main event, Burnie Bryant took care of business. The Sutherlin driver obtained first place at the drop of the green flag and remained there when the checkered fell. It looked like it would be his third win of the season but unfortunately, he did not pass post-race tech. This resulted in a disqualification and gave the victory to Eugene’s Brad Moffett. Moffett is the sixth driver to win a Sport Compact feature this year.

Cole Trissell, of Springfield, ran second and Cottage Grove rookie Jeremy DeGroot placed third. Luther Ramy, from Eugene, ended the race fourth with fifth going to Collen Davidson, of Creswell, in his first career start.

Lastly, the Dwarf Cars were in the house with both the Northwest Dwarf Car and Southern Oregon Dwarf Car Association clubs in attendance. Come main event time Josh Rogers, from St. Helens took control of the front of the field on the start. Rogers stayed in the position until being overtaken on lap nine by Anthony Pope.

The Roseburg racer, of Pope, dominated the rest of the way and went unchallenged to score the huge win for car owner Clay Goben. Hillsboro’s John Chirsman ended the race second after starting eighteenth while third was Shane Youngren, of Tigard, both of which came from the B Main. Jimmy Brinster, from St. Helens earned fourth with fifth going to Lebanon's Danny Altom. Shane Youngren was the winner of the consolation feature.
