In June of 1953, Herb Thomas spoiled a dominant effort by Lee Petty to win a race in the series now known as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at a newly-opened Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida.
Now nearly 60 years later, NASCAR racing will be back at Five Flags.

Track officials announced today that the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East will make its first-ever trip to the Pensacola half-mile April 12 and 13, 2013. The young up-and-coming NASCAR stars and short track veterans of the K&N Pro Series East will battle at the “Home of the Snowball Derby in Pensacola for 150 laps as NASCAR racing returns to the Florida Panhandle.

“The debut of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East at Five Flags Speedway is a great way to celebrate our 60th Anniversary in 2013, said Five Flags Speedway General Manager Tim Bryant. “We have an extremely passionate fan base for short track racing here in the Pensacola area that will really enjoy this series and what it offers. The K&N Pro Series East is a perfect combination of the door-to-door action that our weekly fans expect as well as an influx of drivers, teams and technology of the cars that our fans watch in the Sprint Cup Series every Sunday. We look forward to welcoming NASCAR and the K&N Pro Series East to Pensacola and I’m really excited for this landmark event in April.

“We are very excited to add Five Flags Speedway to the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East schedule, said George Silbermann, NASCAR vice president of regional and touring series. “The series represents some of NASCAR’s best and brightest young stars, and Five Flags is a tremendous short-track that provides a great venue to showcase their talents.

The announcement of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East event comes in advance of the 45th Annual Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway on December 2. The Snowball Derby is widely regarded as the most prestigious short track event in the country as more than 100 Late Model teams will ascend on Pensacola for the event that has been won in the past by NASCAR stars and legends such as Darrell Waltrip, Donnie Allison and Kyle Busch.

Fans attending the Snowball Derby Weekend at Five Flags Speedway will have the opportunity to purchase reserved seating for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East event in the grandstand midway at Five Flags Speedway November 28th through December 2nd.

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series is NASCAR’s top developmental series. K&N Pro Series East drivers that have gone on to NASCAR success include former series champions Ricky Craven, Andy Santerre, Ryan Truex, Joey Logano and 2012 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Champion Kyle Larson. Current top-level NASCAR drivers that used the K&N East as a stepping stone in their career include former Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne, Martin Truex, Jr., Ty and Austin Dillon and Ryan Blaney. 2011 Snowball Derby winner Chase Elliott, a Hendrick Motorsports driver, has been a regular in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East in recent seasons.

Further details regarding the April 12 and 13 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East event at Five Flags Speedway will be announced soon.
