YANKOWSKI AND CLARK SCORE MODIFIED WINS AT FONDA
By: Ron Szczerba
Fonda, NY – Double feature Saturday due to a rain delayed Amsterdam Truck Center Modified event back on June 28 and then again on July 12 saw Alex Yankowski and Cody Clark take feature wins on Saturday evening at the Fonda Speedway, Yankowski winning the rain delayed event while Clark captured the regularly scheduled feature.
“Obviously we’re still thinking of Stew (Stewart Friesen) and that whole deal,” Yankowski said after the win. “The 44 wasn’t here to kick all of our butts tonight but I’m looking forward to racing with him here again. Really good to have Jaybird (Jay Castimore) and Burky with us tonight and I’ve been on the phone with Tommy (Conroy) a lot.”
“It took me forever to get by Jason (Reome),” Clark told Mimi Lazzaro in F.X. Caprara Victory Lane. “Once I cleared him I felt like my pace picked up a lot more. Lucky for the cautions, if the cautions didn’t come out there was no way I was gonna get by Odasz.”
Other winners on Saturday at Fonda which included three first time winners were Tyler Bobar (first career win in the Swagger Factory Apparel Sportsman division), Andy Graves (first career win in the Leatherstocking Credit Union Pro Stock division), Mason Gray (Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. Limited Sportsman), Jay Ingersol (Fonda Fair Four Cylinder DOHC), and Tim Warner (first career win in the Fonda Fair Four Cylinder SOHC).
The conclusion of the Bill Ag Elimination Match Races were run; the last three rounds being run on Saturday evening with Ronnie Johnson defeating Alex Yankowski and Bobby Hackel IV before being defeated by Jack Lehner in the last round making Lehner the 2025 Bill Ag Elimination Match Race Champion. A complete list of awards and payouts to participants in the event can be seen at the bottom of this release.
Fonda Speedway drivers went through the grandstand with a helmet drive for Stewart Friesen, collecting $3,443 for the injured driver after a vicious wreck in Canada this past week.
Stephanie May started off the racing program with the Nation Anthem followed by the rain delayed Amsterdam Truck Center Modified feature from back on June 28. JaMike Sowle led lap one from his pole starting position before defending Track Champion Alex Yankowski grabbed the lead with a pass on the inside of turn two.
Lap three saw Sowle lose three more positions as Bobby Hackel IV, Ronnie Johnson, and Jack Lehner all got by dropping Sowle back to the fifth spot. Only one yellow flag slowed the event on lap 14 when Tony Farone slowed on the backstretch with Yankowski maintaining the lead on the restart and pulling away for his second win of the 2025 season and the second of his career at Fonda in the Wilcox Construction #84Y followed by Hackel, Lehner, Johnson, and seventh place starter Danny Varin.
“We’ve just been building and building,” Yankowski said. “We have a real good engine shop, such a good group with Corey Wilcox, Tim Millman, F.X. Caprara and others. Really glad to have Jeff Murray on my side building my engines forever since I was a kid in any class we were allowed to. I’m really confident in the team and what we have built.”
The regularly scheduled 30-lap Amsterdam Truck Center Modified feature began with Jason Reome and Ryan Odasz on the front row with Odasz taking the early lead and pulling away from the field after an early caution on lap two. Cody Clark started the event in the fifth position and got by JaMike Sowle on lap five for the fourth position with Jack Lehner following him through for the fifth spot.
At the halfway point in the event, Odasz was out to a big lead followed in the top five by Robert Bublak, Clark, Lehner, and eighth place starter Alex Yankowski. Clark got by Bublak for the second position on lap 18 with Odasz over four seconds ahead at that point. Yankowski moved up to the third position two laps later just before the caution came out for Lehner who suffered a flat left rear tire while running in the top five. Lehner pitted for a new tire and continued at the rear of the field.
Odasz and Clark went into turn one side by side on the restart, but Odasz used his momentum on the outside to clear Clark by the time the pair exited turn two. Clark got two more chances to take the lead on restarts after consecutive cautions on laps 24 and 25, and took advantage of the last restart, taking the lead and going on to his second win of the season and the third of his career at Fonda in the Hoyenga Racing #4.
Clark was followed in the top five by Yankowski, 13th place starter Rocky Warner, 10th place starter Ronnie Johnson, and ninth place starter Bobby Hackel IV. Lehner made it all the way back up to the sixth position after restarting at the rear of the field on lap 21 after his flat tire.
“He (Odasz) was really good up on top and that is where you had to be to keep your momentum up,” Clark said. “Luckily everything played out in our favor. They told me the motor was smoking so we’ll have to go back and analyze that to see what the problem is.”
Jonny Feagles led at the start of the 25-lap Swagger Factory Apparel Sportsman feature with Dan Santabarbara second after sharing the front row with Feagles to start the event. Fourth place starter Tyler Bobar was the new second place car on lap five after getting by Santabarbara with Feagles out to a half straightaway advantage at that point.
On a lap 11 restart after a caution slowed the field, Bobar took the lead with the top five at the halfway point consisting of Bobar, Feagles, Clayton Dumond, Santabarbara, and 12th place starter Dylan Madsen. Bobar used the outside line around the track to pull away from the rest of the field despite being slowed by lap traffic with five laps to go and went on to his first career win in the division in the Shults Auto Center #12B followed in the top five by Feagles, Constantino, DuMond, and Madsen.
“I really didn’t know what was going on back there,” Bobar said after his first career win in the division. “I kept on the high side, kept my foot in it, it was all good there so that’s where we ran it. Thanks to Todd Hoffman, we had a carburetor problem earlier tonight and he came down and got it done, he made it a lot better.”
Jason Morrison took the early lead in the 20-lap Leatherstocking Credit Union Pro Stock feature at the drop of the green flag with Andy Graves second after they started side by side on the front row. Sixth place starter Kenny Gates was the new third place car after getting by AJ Walters for the position on lap six while Morrison and Graves raced side by side for the lead over the next three laps.
Graves took the lead away from Morrison on the inside of turn one on lap 11 with Gates now second and seventh place starter Beau Ballard third. Graves pulled away for the win in the Yurkewecz Auto Crushers #96, the first of his career in the division. Ballard finished second with Gates third, fifth place starter Ivan Joslin fourth, and eighth place starter Nick Stone completing the top five.
“This is my first ever win here at this place in 22 years of racing,” Graves said in victory lane. “This tops off the weekend because I won last night at Utica Rome in my dad’s Vintage car. I’m at a loss for words. We were good and I was just trying to get through the rough stuff, with five laps to go I could smell fuel so I’m not sure what broke. We’re thinking of Stewy tonight, my fathers Vintage car has a lot of Stewy’s parts on it, and we hope that he is on the mend.”
Josh Persse led the first two laps of the 15-lap Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. Limited Sportsman feature until he slowed with a flat tire allowing Robert Rhinehardt to take the lead away. Mason Gray started the event in the sixth position, took the lead away from Rhinehardt with five laps to go, and went on to his first win of the 2025 season and the second of his career in the division in the O’Connor’s Towing #26.
Eighth place starter Corky Warner finished second followed in the top five by Rhinehardt, seventh place starter Camron Hotaling, and third place starter Lance Hill.
“The track is definitely different tonight,” Gray said after his win. “There is a top on one end and a big hole on the other end. Other than that, it was pretty good, but I knew that I had to get away, I knew that Corky (Warner) was coming.”
Jay Ingersoll (DOHC) was the overall winner of the Fonda Fair Four Cylinder feature event with fourth place finisher Tim Warner took his first career win in the SOHC class with Len St. Andrews and William Cook finishing second and third while Jeremiah Paro completed the top five finishing fifth. For Ingersoll it was his 10th win of the season in the Palmer’s Service Center #97J.
“That is the most fun I’ve ever had here, being able to race side by side for many laps, it was a blast,” Ingersoll said after his victory.
“My car started running rough, skipping at the end, I didn’t think I won, I had no clue,” Warner said after his first career win at Fonda.
