Rico Picks Up Popular Win in McCool Junction
PETERSEN MEDIA: Rico Abreu got the taste of his first midget win just two weeks ago, and he wasted no time picking up his second career win at the Junction Motor Speedway and nearly sweeping the weekend by narrowly missing out on victory Sunday night at US 36 Raceway.
The St. Helena, CA driver was stout all weekend with the POWRi series aboard his Keith Kunz Motorsports/Toyota TRD machine.
Saturday night he took to the clay at the Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, NE and was extremely strong early as he picked up a heat race victory after starting in the sixth spot.
The youngster then found himself on the front row of the feature event, as he quickly jumped out to the lead as the race went green.
Abreu was never seriously challenged during the feature as he was the class of the field as he put together a stout 30-laps and secured a dominating victory.
Sunday night Abreu was again in action at the US 36 Raceway in Cameron, MO, and again he was extremely strong right off of the trailer.
Starting seventh in his heat race, Abreu picked his way through the field, and used a last lap, last corner pass to pick up the heat win and put his No.67k machine on the pole for the feature event.
Abreu again shot out to an early lead, as he quickly clicked off laps. While out in front, his KKM teammate, Kyle Larson, worked his way into the second spot, and begun challenging his teammate for the win as they dueled out front.
On the 19th lap, Abreu fell back to second, but he kept Larson within striking distance and the close friends diced through lapped cars.
As the duo was coming out of turn four to take the white flag, Abreu looked to have a run on Larson to grab the lead, but as fate would have it, his machine went up in smoke as he lost a motor and did not finish the race.
“What a roller coaster weekend,” Abreu explained. “We were awesome both nights and I cant thank Keith Kunz and all my guys enough. Saturday we barely had enough tire to finish, and unfortunately Sunday night we lost an engine at the end, which hurts because it was going to be close between (Kyle) Larson and myself.”
Rico and his team would like to thank Abreu Vineyards, Toyota, ButlerBuilt, Kaeding Performance, Outlaw Wings, Swift Metal Finishings, and Petersen Media for their partnership.
ON TAP: Abreu is now set for the Bellville Nationals in Bellville, Kansas kicking off on Thursday.
