Sitterly Charges from Fifteenth for First Oswego Supermodified Win of 2021
OSWEGO, NY (June 21, 2021) - Nine-time and defending Speedway champion Otto Sitterly charged from fifteenth to his first Oswego Speedway Supermodified win of the 2021 season in the first 35-lap Twin feature last Saturday.
Driving the Nicotra Racing No. 7, Sitterly worked his way into the top ten from deep in the field before a lap 13 parking lot in turn four took five cars out of the race.
From there, Sitterly restarted in fourth and took only five laps to get by Mike Bruce, Tim Snyder, and Dave Danzer to take the race lead.
Once out in front, Sitterly set a dominant pace, turning laps consistently at 16.5 seconds to beat Danzer by over six seconds for the win.
“I don’t really have the handle on this wing deal yet,” offered Sitterly. “It was decent at the end, we burned the fuel off and I saw Shullick was there. We get along but he and I race each other hard, so after that he probably lit my wick. Once I got out front I had just tried to pace myself and save my tires for the next race.”
Danzer, who started on the outside pole, led the race until Sitterly passed him with nine to go for the race lead.
“The car was really tight up until the red, and after that we just lost a ton of stagger. The thing ended up being a dump truck,” Danzer commented.
Shullick appeared to have the fastest car early on, and was gunning for the lead by lap three after starting in fourth, however the Ohionian had to pull the Osetek Racing No. 95 to the high side of turns three and four following a stuck throttle scare down the backstretch.
“That is the reason why you run kill switches on your gas pedal, because without one on mine, that car would have been destroyed and I probably would have been hurt. We were literally a battle bot out there between the throttle issue and running into guys in turn four, so to come away with a podium in a race like that is pretty lucky,” Shullick said.
Danzer and Tim Snyder led the field to green with Danzer jumping out in front in the No. 52.
Shullick passed Snyder for second on lap 3 until the throttle miscue on the next circuit brought out the yellow flag.
On the restart it was now Danzer, Snyder, Barnes, Sload, and Bruce in the top five.
The man on the move, however, was the No. 05 of Jeff Abold who had gotten by Joe Gosek, Brandon Bellinger, and Max McLaughlin after the restart to take over seventh.
He closed the gap on sixth and fifth running Bruce and Lou LeVea Jr. almost immediately, and cracked the top five on lap 18.
A lap 20 restart following a caution flag for a slowing Mike McVetta saw Abold shoot to the outside of Sload in turns and one two, and then Barnes in three and four, but the 05 and 68 hooked together, creating a parking lot in turn four.
Barnes, Abold, Sload, Bellinger, Tyler Thompson, Camden Proud, and Lou LeVea Sr. were all involved in the incident with everyone but Thompson unable to continue.
After a lengthy red flag, the running order was now Danzer, Snyder, Bruce, Sitterly, Shullick, Joe Gosek, Dan Connors Jr, Jack Patrick, Hal LaTulip, and Tyler Thompson for the lap 20 restart.
Sitterly used the short run to work to the inside of Bruce and Snyder on lap 25, and then to the outside of Danzer a lap later to inherit the lead.
As the laps wound down, Shullick was able to pick up a few spots, also bypassing both Bruce and Snyder to move into a podium position with five laps remaining.
Sitterly picked up the win by over six seconds ahead of Danzer, Shullick, Snyder, and Bruce in the top five while Bruce, Gosek, Connors, Patrick, LaTulip, and Thompson completed the top ten.
Oswego Speedway has the week off this Saturday, June 26, but will return to action with the Independence Weekend Spectacular on Saturday, July 3 featuring the Jim Shampine and Tony White Memorials for the Novelis Supermodifieds and Pathfinder Bank SBS plus double features for the J&S Paving 350 Supermodifieds.
