Shullick, Bond, and Battle Top Qualifying on Classic Weekend 65 Pole Day

OSWEGO, NY (September 3, 2021) - Dave Shullick Jr, Mike Bond, and Jeffrey Battle were the respective fast qualifiers in the Novelis Supermodified, Pathfinder Bank SBS, and J&S Paving 350 Super divisions on Classic Weekend 65 ‘Pole Day’ at the Oswego Speedway.

With a blistering lap of 15.838 in the Osetek Racing No. 95, track record holder Dave Shullick Jr. set the pole time and will start on the front row for Sunday’s International Classic 200 alongside 5-time Classic Champion Otto Sitterly in the John Nicotra Racing throwback No. 79.

Sitterly and Shullick were the only two drivers to break into the 15-second bracket, with third starting Tyler Thompson hitting a 16.0 and fourth through seventh starting Danny Connors Jr, Brandon Bellinger, Doug Didero, and Dave Danzer all at 16.1 seconds.

Completing the top ten in Classic time trails were Joe Gosek, Keith Shampine, and Chris Perley each with 16.2 second laps.

Eight-time SBS Classic Champion and winner of the last five in a row, Mike Bond, set the top time for Sunday’s Bud Light Classic 75 at 18.703 to edge track champion Dan Kapuscinski’s 18.746.

The top seven in Small Block Super qualifying were all under 19 seconds, with the third through fifth fastest qualifiers of former Classic champion Andrew Schartner, a rookie Noah Ratcliff, and five-time champion Russ Brown able to turn 18.8 laps over G.O. Racing teammates Andy Loden and Greg O’Connor who were both at 18.9.

Filling out the top ten in SBS time trials were Josh Sokolic, Griffin Miller, and Cameron Rowe.

For the 75-lap SBS Classic, an inversion pill of eight was pulled meaning that Sokolic and rookie Miller will make up the front row. The fast-timers Bond and Kapuscinski will start alongside one another in row four.

Finally, it was New England star Jeffrey Battle repeating as the fast timer for the J&S Paving 350 Super Classic 40-lapper.

Battle, with a 16.862, did not come close to touching his 16.5 seconds track record, but was the only car under the 17 second bracket.

The entire top five of Mike Bruce, Brian Sobus, Dalton Doyle, and Mike Netishen were all at the 17.0 mark, with the remaining top ten of Chase Locke, Dave Cliff, Tyler Thompson in the 17.1 range, with the ninth and tenth starters Mike Keddy and first-timmer Bobby Holmes able to clock in at 17.2.

This time, an inversion pill of 10 was also pulled for the 350 Classic, moving Holmes and Keddy to the front row with fast qualifiers Battle and Bruce all the way back in row 5.

Bud Classic Weekend 65 continues tonight with the 75-lap Dave London Memorial XII for the Sunoco New York Super Stocks plus the New York State Compact Championship.

On Saturday, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour rolls into town for the 5th annual 150-lap Toyota Mod Classic alongside the NEMA Midgets, NEMA Lites, and National Compacts.

Sunday will close the curtain on Classic Weekend and Oswego Speedway’s 2021 season with the 65th running of the Budweiser International Classic 200 for Supermodifieds, 30th Bud Light Classic 75 for SBS, and 4th Classic 40 for the J&S Paving 350 Supers.
