Lernerville Family Mourns Loss of Hall of Fame Drivers and Dedicated Employee
Sarver, PA (December 12, 2018) It has been the kind of week we hoped we would never have to bear witness to. The racing family at Lernerville Speedway has been devastated by the news of the loss of two of it's most prominent drivers and a cherished, long time employee in the past week. Hall of Fame drivers Ed Lynch Sr. and Lou Gentile passed away on December 11 and December 9 respectively. Both drivers were integral parts of Lernerville's history, producing staggering win totals and years of memorable moments on the track.
Apollo, Pennsylvania's Lynch, father of Lernerville Hall of Fame driver Ed Lynch Jr., and husband to Jean who also served as scorer and promoter previously, was one of the best modified wheelmen of his time and amassed 39 career victories and three track championships at The Action Track. While competing often in the familiar #88 Gremlin bodied entry, he battled in fields that contained some of the finest drivers in the sport with competitors such as DIRTcar Hall of Famers Blackie Watt and Lou Blaney. He would also find victory lane eight times in Sprint Cars at Lernerville putting him 12th on the all-time wins list with 47 feature events won. Ed Lynch Sr. was 83 years old.
Hubbard, Ohio native Gentile produced six track championships in Six Cylinder Modified action in the #1 Emig entry, while totaling 89 career victories in his career at Lernerville. Gentile also raced at Sharon and Mercer Speedways over the years earning well over 100 wins in his career and more track championships elsewhere. Those who knew him best, remark about the respect they had for him and his generous nature, willing to help others in need.
Candy Binkert who passed away on Friday, December 7, had been a familiar face to many at Lernerville over the years as she served the facility, it's drivers and fans in several capacities over the years. She could be found at the ticket window, pit gate window or even answering the phone on race night. And she was a delight to have on the staff as she displayed genuine care for the people she helped and was passionate about doing her part to make Lernerville a special place.
Our deepest sympathies, thoughts and prayers go out to all family members of the three families. May their contributions to Lernerville never be forgotten, and may they rest in peace.
