Week Two Lakeside Speedway Victories go to Badder, Royalty, Billings, Heeter, Makar, and Park

(Kansas City, Kansas) The Lakeside Speedway track crew and staff scrambled to prepare for racing after overnight storms left the grounds saturated, but their hard work and determination paid off as 86 race teams made their way to the venue to thrill the fans during Seeburg Muffler race night.

‘Racing on the River’s Edge’ for week two included 14 A-Mods, 19 B-Mods, 13 Pure Stocks, 18 Stock Cars, 14 E-Mods, and 8 Grand Nationals. All total, drivers competed in 11 preliminary events and 6 A-Features by the end of the race program.

Pure Stock Recap: Heat Race winners were Jason Ryun and Garry Billings, Jr. Ryun and Billings earned row one starting spots for the main event and Ryun appeared to be on his way to another victory but his night ended early after mechanical woes led to an early demise. It was then Billings’ turn to shine as he held off a strong run by multiple-time champion Marshall Jewett for the victory. Sixth-starting Keith Jennings was third, followed by Ed Swanson and Cody Ohrenberg.

E-Mod Recap: Heat race victories went to Mike Richardson and Steven Makar. The pair sat on the front row for the main event, but Richardson faded to seventh in the final rundown. In one of the night’s most dominant performances, Steven Makar went unchallenged and pulled away for a 15-lap E-Mod win. Zach Boyd advanced from his fifth starting position to secure a solid runner-up finish while Trevor Hand brought his ride home in third. Week one winner Rodney Schweizer moved from eleventh to fourth in the final rundown while Tim Billings secured fifth.

Grand National Recap: Don Marrs led Darren Kling to the finish in the nights lone Grand National heat race as the pair led the field to the initial green flag for the 10-lap main event. Kling grabbed the lead early and paced the field most of the race while Marrs faded from contention. It appeared Kling was well on his way to victory, but seventh-starting Jason Park had other things in mind as he took his colorful Kansas City Chiefs-themed car to victory lane for the win. Kling settled for runner-up on this night with Terry Bruner, Marshall Jewett, and Larry Ferris completing the top five.

Stock Car Recap: Topeka, Kansas driver Robert Garst and Kansas City, Missouri’s Time shields picked up the heat-race victories but it was Dennie Belknap and Shields who accumulated the most preliminary passing points to earn front-row starting honors for the 15-lap main event. Shields looked strong with his familiar 42t showing the way, that is until he lost a tire while leading on lap nine. In a race that experienced heavy attrition, Shields finished fifth as just three cars of the 18 on hand finished the race. Brett Heeter mastered the track from his thirteenth starting position and in dramatic fashion made a final turn pass to secure his second-consecutive Stock Car victory with Belknap holding on for second. Eddie Ingram was third just ahead of Chad Walker in fourth.

B-Mod Recap: Luke Nieman and Nick Newton captured preliminary heat race wins in the B-Mod division. Newton and Trevor Hunt earned the front row starting spots for the night’s 15-lap main event and Newton looked very strong early. Unfortunately, Newton’s strong run came to an early end as he was forced to retire while running up front, Hunt was consistent through the course of the race and came away fifth. Tim Powell grabbed the point as Newton faded but by lap nine it was last week’s feature winner, Patrick Royalty, who once again advanced forward by lap nine and after a caution flag, to secure his second B-Mod win in a row. Powell was second in the final standings with Nieman locking down a solid third place run. Shadren Turner was the man on the move in B-Mods for the night as he advanced from 18th on the grid to finish a solid fourth when the checkered flag fell.

A-Mod Recap: A pair of Missouri-based drivers drove to heat race wins during A-Mod competition with Terry Schultz of Sedalia and Shad Badder of Bates City securing the wins. The pair occupied row one for the night’s 20-lap feature event and it was a tail of two scenarios as Schultz was looking to end a long dry spell from victory lane while Badder experienced his first night out of the season. While Schultz was strong, it was Badder’s night as his machine looked flawless throughout the duration of the race to secure the victory. Like last week when Olathe, Kansas driver Justin Johnson advanced from sixth to second by race end, he again moved forward, this time from sixth, to finish runner-up for the second week in a row. Tyler Hibner started and finished third with Schultz slipping to fourth while multiple time track champion Tim Karrick was fifth.

Up next on Friday, June 12th is weekly racing featuring A-Mods, B-Mods, Stock Cars, Pure Stocks, E-Mods, and Grand Nationals. Pit Gate Opens 5:00 p.m., Spectator Gate Opens 6:00 p.m., Drivers' Meeting 7:00 p.m., Hot Laps 7:15 p.m., Racing to follow hot laps.
