Lakeside Speedway Main Events go to Johnson, Bryant, Wettengel, Jewett, Makar, and Park!

(Kansas City, Kansas) A solid field of 90 cars made their way to Lakeside Speedway on Friday in six divisions for O'Reilly Auto Parts night at the races and week three of the 2020 season.

Throughout the night drivers competed in 13 preliminary heat races and 5 main events for a total of 18 races. Car counts for the night included 13 A-Mods, 26 B-Mods, 13 Pure Stocks, 18 Stock Cars, 12 E-Mods, and 8 Grand Nationals.

Pure Stock Recap: Garry Billings, Jr., blasted from his fifth starting position to claim the opening Pure Stock heat race while fourth-starting Marshall Jewett of Gardner, Kansas claimed heat two. Billings Jr. and Jewett captured front-row honors for the 12-lap main event. Billings set sail searching for a second victory on the season at the drop of the green flag with multiple-time champion and main-event winner Jewett. The outside row was the place to start in this week’s Pure Stock main as Jewett ultimately captured the win over Billings. Keith Jennings started and finished third with Joe Smith, Jr., moving from eighth-starting position to fourth as Calvin Banks of Atchison, Kansas rounded out the top five.

E-Mod Recap: Rodney Schweizer showed the way to the checkered flag in heat one for the E-Mods with Bonner Springs, Kansas driver Trevor Hand advancing from third to take the second and final heat. Hand and Schweizer began the 15-lap E-mod main event from the front row. It was a night of high-attrition for the E-Mods as just seven of the original starters finished the race with Hand being one of the drivers unable to finish. This left the race wide open for Schweizer to find his way back to victory lane but on this night, it was Basehor, Kansas driver Steven Makar who emerged from the race as the victor. Schweizer started and finished second with Dakota Earls moving from fifth to third, bringing sixth-starting Brian Andrews along with him to finish fourth. Ryan Smith rounded out the top five.

Grand National Recap: Last week’s feature winner, Jason Park, of Kansas City, Kansas moved from fifth on the grid to claim the lone heat race of the night in Grand National competition. Jason Park was in search of his second-consecutive Grand National victory as he and Darren Kling began the night’s 10-lap main event from row one. Park once again looked strong for the long haul as he kept his #15m at the helm with Kling slipping back to third by race end. Don Marrs advanced from his sixth-starting spot but came up one spot short as one again Park prevailed to take his second straight victory over Marrs, Kling, Marshall Jewett, and Terry Bruner inside the top five.

Stock Car Recap: Tim Shields continued his winning ways to secure the first Stock Car heat victory of the night from the pole while Topeka, Kansas’ Jaylen Wettengel was also victorious from the pole to take heat two. Nick Whalen earned the most passing points from heat race action as he and Tim Shields led the charge at the front for the field for the 15-lap Stock Car finale. The main event for the Stock Cars pleased the fans in the stands as the race was a nail-biter all the way to the final turn. Whalen shot out to an early lead and ran strong for the duration of the 15 laps but second-starting Jaylen Wettengel kept digging for the win and on the last corner of the final lap, made his move to the checkered flag count as he came away with an exciting win. Whalen finished second after his solid outing with Tim Shields third. Brett Heeter advanced from sixteenth on the field as he climbed his way to fourth with the ‘Coach’ Kevin Anderson completing the top five.

B-Mod Recap: It took three heat races to sort out the B-Mods for their main event lineup. Kansas City, Kansas driver Nick Newton claimed heat one, while Sturgis Streeter kept Topeka, Kansas in the spotlight with the heat two victory. Austin Charles kept it an all-Kansas driver sweep of the heat races as he snagged the third and final heat of the night. Tyson Lanfermann emerged as the pole-sitter alongside Nick Newton for the 20-lap B-Mod main event. It was anyone’s guess who would come away the victor in the B-Mod main as the field was full of talent throughout the starting grid. Only Newton was able to run near the front for the duration of the race as Lanfermann and Charles ultimately faded to eighth and tenth respectively in the final rundown. The theme of this race was drivers moving forward. Throughout the race, drivers on the move included Daniel Harris from 19th to 11th, Shadren Turner from 26th to 7th, and Luke Nieman from eighth to fifth. Multiple-time winner Patrick Royalty once again ran strong advancing from seventh to fourth while Tim Powell was also on the move to finish third from twelfth on the grid. As mentioned, Newton was solid throughout the night once again and came away with a solid runner-up finish as he tried to close in for the win, but it was Ft. Scott, Kansas, driver, Andy Bryant, who secured the victory from sixth on the grid. For his efforts, Bryant collected the extra money put up by the Lakeside Speedway fire crew. Thank you to the crew for doing this for the drivers!

A-Mod Recap: Randal Schiffelbein, Jr., was victorious in the opening A-Mod heat race as he kept former champion Nic Bidinger at bay for the win. Darron Fuqua of Mayetta, Kansas took heat two ahead of Olathe, Kansas driver Justin Johnson for the heat two victory. Fuqua and Schiffelbein, Jr., occupied row one for the night’s final event, the 20-lap A-Mod feature. Fuqua appeared to be the man to beat once again but he unfortunately suffered mechanical woes and left the race while leading. By the halfway point, Justin Johnson led Tim Karrick, Terry Schultz, and Tyler Hibner. Johnson consistently ran laps to keep Karrick behind him while Tyler Hibner turned on a late charge to move past Schultz and Karrick by lap 18 in search of the lead. In the end, Johnson was victorious as Hibner’s charge to the front came up one position short as he settled for second with Karrick a solid third. Schultz slipped to fourth by race end while Schiffelbein was fifth.

Up next on Friday, June 19th is weekly racing featuring A-Mods, B-Mods, Pure Stocks, E-Mods, Mod-Lites, and Grand Nationals. (No Stock Cars). Pit Gate Opens 5:00 p.m., Spectator Gate Opens 6:00 p.m., Drivers' Meeting 7:00 p.m., Hot Laps 7:15 p.m., Racing to follow hot laps.
