Lakeside Speedway Wins go to Hibner, Bryant, Shields, Hand, Jewett, and Park!

(Kansas City, Kansas) On a hot summer night, 93 cars field the pits for RockAuto.com night at the races at Lakeside Speedway. ‘Racing on the River’s Edge’ featured six classes of competition that included 11 A-Mods, 22 B-Mods, 10 Pure Stocks, 25 Stock Cars, 18 E-Mods, and 7 Grand Nationals.

The program featured 19 events, including 13 preliminary heat races and five main events. By the end of the of the night, Tyler Hibner collected his first A-Mod win of the year while Andy Bryant drove to his sixth B-Mod victory. Tim Shields captured his second-consecutive Stock Car victory with Trevor Hand picking up his third E-Mod victory. Marshall Jewett fought hard for his third win of the season in Pure Stocks as did Jason Park in Grand National competition.

A-Mods Recap, Heat Races: Tyler Hibner collected the heat one victory over Justin Johnson and John Baker with Darron Fuqua driving to the win in heat two ahead of Terry Schultz and Nic Bidinger. Feature Recap: Johnson and Hibner took the initial green flag from row one but Hibner was loose and drifted high in turn one, allowing Fuqua to sweep low for the lead. Justin Johnson also moved forward and challenged at the front. Caution flew by lap five with Fuqua leading Johnson and Hibner. At lap six Hibner moved to second and began closing in on Fuqua by the halfway mark. Hibner closed the gap to one second by lap 15 and then began pressuring Fuqua for the lead shortly thereafter. By lap 17, Hibner made his move for the lead with a low-side pass and eventually distanced himself over the remaining laps to collect the victory, his first of the year to add to his point’s lead. Fuqua was second at the line with Johnson third. Schiffelbein moved from eighth on the grid to make a late-race pass on Terry Schultz for fourth with Schultz rounding out the top five.

B-Mods Recap, Heat Races: Tim Powell was victorious in the opening heat over Luke Nieman while Kyle Henning of Atchison, Kansas picked up the win in heat two ahead of Patrick Royalty. Andy Bryant drove to an easy win in heat three over Nick Drew. Feature Recap: Powell and Drew collected the most passing points to start from row one for the 20-lap main event with Drew leading the opening lap. Andy Powell rocketed around Drew to take command by lap two with a caution over the field shortly thereafter. A second caution slowed the field by lap six with Bryant leading Patrick Royalty, Drew, Sturgis Streeter, and Luke Nieman. At the halfway point Bryant built a sizeable lead over Royalty, Nieman, Streeter, and Tyson Lanfermann. Another caution flew on lap 13 for debris as Bryant continued leading Royalty, Streeter, Nieman, and Lanfermann. A lap 17 caution shook up the top five as Austin Charles, who had advanced from deep in the field to the top five experienced problems on his car and as he was trying to pull off to the infield his car was hit from behind sending him into an infield utility tire ending his strong run. At the same time, Streeter’s strong run came to an end as he also retired to the infield. The final three laps were not enough for anyone to challenge Bryant as he collected his sixth victory of the season, this time over Royalty in second, Nieman third, Lanfermann fourth, and Randy Ainsworth fifth.

Stock Cars Recap, Heat Races: Gary Donaldson was victorious to start of the Stock Car preliminaries in heat one over tail-starting Dominic Thyfault. Tim Shields moved from fourth to command heat two ahead of Kevin Anderson at the finish and Jaylen Wettengel of Topeka, Kansas picked up the victory in heat three over Thomas Ground. Feature Recap: A full field of Stock Cars voted to run a 20-lap a-main rather than the normal 15, which in the end did not pan out as the race featured a nine-car red-flag incident that blocked the track and multiple caution periods. Gary Donaldson and Dominic Thyfault began the race from row one with Donaldson darting out to an early race lead. Thyfault and Shields were racing for position in turn one after the restart and ultimately after contact, Thyfault spun drawing a caution over the field with Thyfault having to report to the tail-end for the restart. After an early caution period, Tim Shields moved up to challenge by lap four as Jaylen Wettengel, Brett Heeter, and Kevin Anderson ran close inside the top five. At lap five, a nine-car incident blocked the track forcing a red flag over the field and leading to a shakeup amongst the top ten after Casey Shields experienced problems. As his car slowed, he was struck from behind, which led to the melee. On the restart, drivers were notified the race was cut to 15 laps. Shields took the lead from Donaldson at lap seven, but another debris caution flew shortly after as Shields led Donaldson, Wettengel, Heeter, and Anderson. One more caution slowed the field by lap eight before drivers finally seemed to find a race rhythm to run the last seven laps caution-free. Eventually, Shields pulled away for his second win of the season with Donaldson second, Wettengel third, Heeter fourth, and Anderson fifth at the finish.

E-Mods Recap, Heat Races: Shaunie Lanning advanced from fifth on the grid to take her first heat win of the year to start E-Mod competition over Zach Boyd. Trevor Hand collected the heat two win over Adam Schelert.
Feature Recap: The E-mod 15-lap main began with a lap one incident that forced Dakota Earls to the pits after he contacted the back-stretch wall. He was okay after the wreck. Once the field returned to action it was all Trevor Hand up front as he built a sizeable lead over the course of the race. A pair of cautions slowed the race by the lap-six point with Hand leading Michael Taylor, Rodney Schweizer, and Zach Boyd. One more caution slowed the action by lap nine as Hand continued to lead, with Schweizer advancing to second. Steven Makar moved from 10th on the grid into the top five by late in the race. From this point on, Hand sailed to his third victory of the season with Schweizer coming away the runner-up at the finish. The top five was rounded out by Boyd, Makar, and Adam Schelert.

Pure Stock Recap, Heat Races: Spencer Reiff led the way in the opening Pure Stock preliminary over Don Marrs with Garry Billings, Jr. taking the heat two win over Marshall Jewett. Feature Recap: The 12-lap Pure Stock feature had all the makings of a near-perfect battle at the front until the final lap action led to a dramatic change as the leaders battled through lapped traffic. At the start, Billings Jr. and Reiff started the race up front with Billings taking the early lead. Reiff, Jewett, and J.R. Billings ran a hotly contested battle for the entire first half of the race for a spot in the top four. Jewett moved up to second to challenge Billings Jr. at the front. As the pair raced hard for the win over the final two circuits the crowd witnessed some close-quarters competition and changes for the lead as Jewett moved to the front. Billings Jr. retook the lead after the white flag but as the leaders raced through lapped cars, Billings Jr. made contact with one of these cars, which led to front-end damage and brought his night to a heart-breaking end with the checkers in sight. In the end, Jewett went on to collect his third win of the season, this time over J.R. Billings with a strong runner-up finish and Reiff in third. Marrs finished fourth with Billings Jr. fifth.

Grand Nationals Recap, Heat Races: Darren Kling moved from the fourth-starting spot to win the lone Grand National heat ahead of Don Marrs and Donnie Brown. Feature Recap: Kling and Marrs earned the front-row starting spots for the 10-lap Grand National main event. Kling and Marrs were strong out of the gate, but it was fourth-starting Jason Park who moved to the point by lap three, leaving Kling and Marrs to battle for second. Marrs’ night ended early as he retired from the race with Park eventually pulling away from Kling to capture his third win of the season. Kling was second at the line with Donnie Brown third, Marshall Jewett fourth, and Jim Baker fifth.
