Johnson, Bryant, Anderson, Schweizer, and Belknap Capture Lakeside Speedway Main Events!

(Kansas City, Kansas) A total of 108 cars checked into Lakeside Speedway on Friday night for the Janet Billings Memorial and E-Mod Explosion. Among entrants were 11 A-Mods, 27 B-Mods, 21 Pure Stocks, 22 Stock Cars, and 27 E-Mods. E-Mods raced for extra purse money presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts.

Throughout the night, fans witnessed 21 events, which included 16 preliminary heat races and five main events. The night’s program was held in honor of Janet Billings, whose life was tragically cut short in the winter of 2014. The Billings family raised extra purse money for the Pure Stock main event.

A-Mod Recap, Heat Races: A pair of heat races for the A-Mods sorted out the night’s feature race lineup as Nic Bidinger of Perry, Kansas took the win in heat one ahead of point’s leader Tyler Hibner. For heat two, it was Justin Johnson of Olathe, Kansas taking the win over Danny Scrogham. Feature: Johnson and Bidinger sat themselves up for a 20-lap showdown when the A-Mods hit the track for their main event. Bidinger took command at the green flag with Johnson and Hibner close behind. At lap two, point’s leader Hibner spun around in between turns three and four to draw an early race caution. For the restart, Bidinger led Johnson, Randal Schiffelbein, Scrogham, and Bill Ruisinger. Two laps later with Bidinger still out front, caution flew for another single-car spin. The field went back to green with Bidinger in control through lap nine as Johnson was beginning to put some pressure on the leader. At the same time, Hibner rebounded from his early spin and moved into fourth. Another single-car incident brought out the yellow at lap nine. The final half of the race went off without a caution and setup a blistering pace to the end as Bidinger and Johnson fought for the win. Bidinger maintained his lead through lap 17 over Johnson as Hibner advanced to third. On lap 18, it was Johnson now in command of the race as he went on to pull away from Bidinger to pickup his third win of the year, whom he dedicated with heavy hearts to his crew member lost earlier in the week. Bidinger was second followed by Hibner, Schiffelbein, and Bill Ruisinger.

B-Mod Recap, Heat Races: Austin Charles comfortably grabbed the win over Dakota Girard for the first B-Mod heat win with Luke Nieman holding off multiple-time feature winner Andy Bryant in heat two. Nick Newton dominated for the win in heat three over Randy Ainsworth while Tim Powell bested Patrick Royalty for the final heat four victory. Feature: For the 20-lap B-Mod main event, it was Charles and Nieman who led the field to the initial green flag. Charles led the way early over Nieman at the onset with Andy Bryant pulling to third by lap three with Powell in the top four as well. The field ran the first 11 laps caution-free as Charles and Bryant ran nose-to-tail and many times side-by-side for the lead until the first caution period waved over the field. When racing resumed, Charles led Bryant, Nieman, Powell, Gabriel Hodges, and Patrick Royalty. Bryant was strong on the restart and grabbed the lead just after racing resumed in turn two, from that point on, Bryant went unchallenged and cruised to his eighth feature win of the season. Powell moved to second on the restart and kept early race leader Charles behind him to finish in the runner-up position with Charles third. Nieman finished fourth with Royalty in fifth. It was Bryant’s second feature in of the week as he also won the B-Mod portion of Tuesday night’s sprint car event. Bryant said, “If we could get a win tomorrow, it would cap off a great week, I have to thank my Dad, I don’t know how he does it but he’s a magician.”

Stock Car Recap, Heat Races: Former feature winner Jaylen Wettengel of Topeka, Kansas picked up the first Stock Car heat win over Brad Smith. Gary Donaldson of Rayville, Missouri, picked up the heat two win over Thomas Ground, and ‘Coach’ Kevin Anderson claimed the final heat over Dennie Belknap. Feature: Anderson and Wettengel earned row one starting positions for the 15-lap main event. Wettengel took advantage of a lap one slip by Anderson to take the lead early on but caution slowed the field after just one lap. Anderson Donaldson, Smith, and Belknap ran inside the top five behind the leader for the restart. On the restart, the drivers went four-wide for the lead off turn two and down the back stretch and when the cars came back around it was Anderson who grabbed the lead over Wettengel and Belknap. The field stayed clean and green through lap nine when a single-car spin brought out the yellow flag with six laps remaining. Anderson flirted with the turn one wall on lap 10 but retained his lead with caution flying again by lap 12 as Michael Knight and Wayne Brooke got together in turn one in a disagreement that led to Knight being disqualified from the event after he exited his car and tossed his steering wheel at Brooke. The race had just four laps remaining with Anderson leading the way. Two more cautions flew in the final laps setting up two attempts at a green, white, and checkered-flag finish with Anderson out front. For the final pair of laps, the fans were treated to one of the closest finishes of the season as Donaldson blasted down the back stretch to take the lead into turn three with a slider in search of his second win of the week after winning Tuesday’s support event of the sprint car special, but Anderson was able to come back under Donaldson and retake the lead winning by a mere .020 seconds at the line. Donaldson finished second behind Anderson with Belknap third, Brad Smith fourth, and Wettengel in fifth. Point’s leaders Brett Heeter and Tim Shields kept their battle close in sixth and seventh. In victory lane Anderson dedicated his win to close friend and crew member, Gene, saying, “This one’s for him.”

E-Mod Recap, Heat Races: Trevor Hand of Bonner Springs, Kansas, collected the heat one victory when E-Mod competition began over Mike Richardson. Rodney Schweizer continued his winning ways over Josh Adkins for heat two. Eddie Ingram of Linn Valley, Kansas bested Adam Schelert for the heat three win while Steven Makar of Basehor, Kansas took the heat four win over Paul Lanfermann. Feature: For the 20-lap main event, Rodney Schweizer and Trevor Hand started on the first row. Schweizer grabbed the early race lead over a great battle with Hand and Makar as the trio distanced themselves from the rest of the field until caution flew at lap four. Hand unexpectedly pulled to the hot pit for repairs under the caution, which moved Paul Lanfermann inside the top three for the restart. With Schweizer well in control of the race after the restart, caution again flew at lap seven with Makar, Lanfermann, Mike Richardson, and Billy Spilman inside the top five. Another caution flew at lap eight, before the race went back to green-flag status. Schweizer built up a half straightaway lead over Makar before caution flew again at lap 11. For the next five laps, Schweizer again pulled away by a full straightaway on Makar and Lanfermann until caution slowed the field on lap 16. Brian Andrews and Brayden Bennett moved into the top five for the restart. The final four laps went caution-free with Schweizer pulling away for the $1,000 victory. Makar finished in the number two spot with Lanfermann, Bennett, and Andrews rounding out the top five. It was Schweizer’s second victory of the season and first since opening night in May.

Pure Stock Recap, Heat Races: Garry Billings, Jr. held off Marshall Jewett for the first win of the night as competition began with the Pure Stocks. Spencer Reiff was able to retake the lead from Jason Ryun to claim heat race two while J.R. Billings raced to a heat-race victory in honor of his sister Janet in heat three ahead of Blaine Yonts. Feature: It was an all Billings front row with J.R. on the inside and Garry on the outside for the 15-lap main event in honor of Janet Billings. Garry Billings grabbed the early race lead over Jewett and J.R. Billings through lap four when a caution slowed the field for the first time. When racing resumed Gary Billings again commanded the next phase of green-flag racing as he led through the second caution period of the night for an incident down the front stretch. On the restart, it was Garry Billings, Jewett, J.R. Billings, Jason Ryun and Dennie Belknap inside the top five. J.R. Billings pressured for the lead when the race resumed but Garry Billings withstood the challenge as Jewett stayed in the hunt. At lap 11, J.R. Billings’ night came to an early end as he exited the track just as the race between Marshall Jewett and Garry Billings was heating up. Yellow flew again on lap 12, setting up an exciting finish for the when. Garry Billings led the field to the restart with a strong challenge from Jewett and Belknap behind him. Belknap moved to second by lap 13 and put pressure on the leader at the white flag to grab the lead. Off turn two for the final time, Belknap made his move stick and kept his Bobby Russell-owned machine out front for his first victory of the year in the Janet Billings Memorial. Garry Billings was second with Jewett, Jason Ryun and Spencer Reiff rounding out the top five. In victory lane, Belknap said, “Janet was with me on that one, this one’s for her.”
