6th Annual Doug Walters Classic Next For SSP
By Ben Deatherage
Banks, Oregon- Sunset Speedway Park is back in action on Saturday August 2nd for the 6th annual Doug Walters Classic. This race is ran in honor of former SSP promoter Doug Walters who was a huge supporter of racing in the Pacific Northwest. Classes in competition include the Northwest Extreme Late Model Series, IMCA Modifieds, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, and 4-Bee’s.

The Late Models will compete for sixty-seven laps in honor of Doug’s old number while the IMCA Modifieds will race for fifty-seven. Other classes will be going longer distances too. The Street Stocks are scheduled for forty-seven circuits, Pure Stocks thirty-seven, and 4-Bee’s twenty-seven.

So far Doug’s son Greg Walters has been a perfect five for five at the “Banks Bullring” with the Northwest Extreme Late Model Series in 2014. Also to note is that he has emerged victorious in every single edition of the race ran in honor of his father.

Doug Lockwood is still leads in the points table and the win column in the IMCA Modifieds. A whole bunch of drivers have managed to visit the winner’s circle just once. That list includes Craig Cassell, Rob Ireland, Matt Jenner, Mark Carrell, Travis Peery, and Bubba Foster.

John Ireland has had quite the year in Street Stocks with main event wins this year. Both Freya Smith and Brian Roden have scored two wins while Marc Farrar, Tony Catalano, Earl Claypool Jr., and Roger Hubbard have one win each. In the Pure Stocks Trevor LaBarge leads the division in win with his three main event victories over Ken Schave who has two.

Last but not least in the 4-Bee’s John Gartner has amassed four wins while Travis Koch is close behind with three. Stan Asanovic and Bo Jones each have won once during the current campaign.

Pit Gates will open at 2:00 PM, Front Gates open at 3:30, and racing starts at 6:00. Tickets for the event are Adults $12.00, Seniors/Military/Juniors (13-17) $10.00, Youths (Ages 12-6) $5.00, and Children under the age of 5 are FREE and a Family Pass will be offered for two Adults and up to four Youths for just $35.00.
