In addition to the Northwest Extreme Late Model Series on tap at Sunset Speedway Park for the Doug Walters Classic four other divisions were on the card on Saturday August 2nd. The IMCA Modifieds, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, and 4-Bee’s were all on hand at the “Banks Bullring”.
Taking care of business and leading flag to flag in the IMCA Modifieds was Craig Cassell, who had managed to make it to the race after coming back from a wedding earlier in the afternoon. The Albany chauffeur would collect his second win of 2014 at SSP and the third overall this year for the Ester Lee Motel/Dr. Mary Harada Breast Cancer Specialist/Debra Herndon Family Nurse Practitioner/Mid-Valley Farms/Frank’s Fab & Auto #25 Rocket by Ruhlman team.
The Aloha Station Tavern/Perfection Automotive/Ross Electric/Curtis Trailers #66 Shaw of Doug Lockwood, hailing from Aloha, was the runner-up with Greg Walters of Banks finishing in third for car owner Robert Duncan in the Duncan Automotive/Dancin’ Bare Gentleman’s Club/Somers Racing Engines #09 Pierce. The Ireland and Ireland at Law/Privateer Racing/Klecker Knives and Tools/Applebee Aviation #8 Dirt Works by Jerry Hoffman of Banks’ Rob Ireland came home in fourth while Vancouver, Washington driver Chris Quinn, piloting the Rauch Racing #X3 Victory for car owner Erika Rauch, was fifth.
Despite only leading a couple of laps Sherwood’s Marc Farrar would have the crowd on their feet. Farrar, in his A.F.T. Racing Engines/Aftermarket Enterprises #5 Camaro, would collect the lead from Roger Hubbard of Sandy on lap forty-six. It would be Farrar’s second win of the season.
Earl Claypool Jr. of Hillsboro was second in his Beaverton Machine Shop/Customs by RC/JNR Construction #3 Camaro while the Hubbard Painting and Sealcoating/Dailey Trucking #18 Camaro of Roger Hubbard was third. The rest of the top five would be made up of Tony Catalano of Forest Grove in the Meyers Auto Body/DVC Machine #19 Monte Carlo in fourth and McMinnville’s Frey Smith was fifth in her Sweere's Auto Body/Sweere's Trucking/Tire Factory of McMinnville #37 Camaro.
Ken Schave of Brush Prairie, Washington would be in dominant form in the Pure Stock ranks. Driving his Creekside Mortgage #05 Nova he would lead every single lap to win his third victory of the campaign.
Terry Houck of Yamhill was second in the Luttrell's Trucking/Trask Mountain Outpost/Sweere's Trucking/Happy Hut #53 Nova while behind him was the #66 machine of Kendall Lee. The #8 of Tyler Smith would cross the wire in fourth and Jim Peterson, in his Rogers Repair Service #33 Monte Carlo, was fifth,
Seizing the lead on lap four Vancouver, Washington’s Travis Koch would run away with it once taking the top spot. It would mark the fourth time in 2014 that Koch has put his North's Plumbing/Dusty's Automotive/Mac Tools/Dan's Cylinder Heads #21 Dodge Neon in the winner’s circle.
Portland native John Gartner was second in the Ram Light Truck Salvage/Napa Auto Parts/Ace Car Detailing/J&T Racing #48 Mitsubishi Eclipse followed by the Sweere’s Trucking #38 Dodge Neon of Chris Bataglia from Forest Grove. Bo Jones of Troutdale was fourth in the Mark’s Towing and Transports #82 Dodge Neon while the Calhoun Racing #98 machine of Thomas Calhoun would be fifth.
Sunset Speedway Park will host the Open Wheel Frenzy this Saturday August 9th. This will be the one and only appearance of the whole year by the American Sprint Car Series-Northwest Region as well as the USAC Focus Midgets. Also on the card is the Micro Sprints.
