Four first-time feature winners at PPMS for Modified Madness

Imperial, PA

The track was in great shape and the weather was even better at Dirt’s Monster Half Mile for the Modified Madness show. It was a great night of racing with 12 heat races, eight features, and four first-time feature winners.

In the RUSH Sportsman Modified 15-lap feature, Brian Schaffer (41) of Slippery Rock started on the pole. To his outside starting in second was Tony Tatgenhorst (63T) while Joshua Alan Deems (9D) of Volant started in third, Chelsie Kreigisch (10) of Ellwood City started in fourth, Kole Holden (2) of Tiona started in fifth, and Jessica Kreigisch (63) of Ellwood City rounded out the top three rows. By the second lap, third-starting Deems (9D) had fallen to fifth, allowing C. Kreigisch (10) and Holden (2) to move into fourth and fifth respectively while Schaffer (41) led the field. By the middle of the event, C. Kreigisch (10) had made her way up to second behind Schaffer (41) with Holden (2) in third, ninth-starting Chas Wolbert (C3) of Howland, Ohio was in fourth, Brian Sadler (5) of Apollo was in fifth, and tenth-starting Rocky Kugel (83) of East Liverpool, Ohio had made his way up to sixth. On lap 13, C. Kreigisch (10) would pass Schaffer (41) for the lead coming out of turn four, and she wouldn’t look back, picking up her first PPMS win of her career. Following her to the finish line was Schaffer (41) in second, Wolbert (C3) in third, Holden (2) in fourth, Kugel (83) in fifth, Sadler (5) in sixth, Tatgenhorst (63T) in seventh, Deems (9D) in eighth, Justin Shea (14S) in ninth, and May 5 winner Brandon Ritchey (17) rounded out the top ten. Heat race winners were Kugel (83) and Wolbert (C3).

In the Elite Modified 15-lap feature, Brian Toto (8B) of Kinsman, Ohio was the pole-sitter. On the outside starting in second was Ty Rhoades (12) of Pittsburgh. In the second row, starting in third was Butch Lambert (19) while Tyler Frankenberry of Painesville, Ohio started in fourth. When the green flag dropped, it didn’t take Rhoades (12) very long to take the lead. By the seventh lap, Rhoades (12) had a commanding lead over the field and was leading by an entire straightaway. Lap nine saw trouble when Frankenberry (38) blew a right rear tire and tagged the wall between turns three and four, bringing out the caution. The restart had Rhoades (12) still in first, Nate Young (42) of Painesville, Ohio in second, Jeremy Double (83) in third, Jacob Eucker (64) of Fowler, Ohio in fourth, and Henry Henry in fifth. With the checkered flag waving, Rhoades (12) would pick up his second PPMS win of the season. He was followed by, Double (83) in second, Henry (21) in third, Young (42) in fourth, Eucker (64) in fifth, Butch Lambert (19) in sixth, Brian Toto (8B) in seventh, Frankenberry (38) in eighth, Jeff Conn (511) in ninth, Mark Titus (25) in tenth, Brian Hutchko (60) in eleventh, and Bob Simmons (4RJ) rounded out the field in twelveth. Frankenberry (38) and Double (83) won the heat races.

In the Vintage Modifieds feature, David Meyers (89) of Franklin started on the pole. Starting in second was Chris Ketch (85NY) of Ransomville, New York, while Paul Bacchus (7) started in third, and Alex Morris (09) started in fourth. On lap two, Meyers (89) would lead the field with Ketch (85NY) in second, and Robert Johnson (21) in third. Lap six saw the event’s only caution. On the restart, Meyers (89) would continue to lead the field with Morris (09) in second, Ketch (85NY) in third, Hank Coles (47H) in fourth, and Paul Bacchus (7) in fifth. With the checkered flag waving, Meyers (89) would pick up his first PPMS win of the season. He was followed by Morris (09) in second, Ketch (85NY) in third, Paul Baccus (in fourth) and Johnson (21) would round out the field for the four-barrel Vintage Modifieds. Taking first place for the two-barrel Vintage Modifieds was Coles (47H). He was followed by Dale Zimmer (21W) in second, and Jake Senica (17) in third. Meyers (89) and Senica (47H) won the heat races.

Beighey (36) took the lead on lap two with Hall (01) in tow while pole-sitter Zarin (1Z) fell to third. Lap three saw the event’s first caution when Hall (01) and Zarin (1Z) got together in turn four, causing them both to spin out. On the restart, Beighey (36) would lead the field, and with Hall (01) and Zarin (1Z) forced to tag the field, Justin Lamb (93X) of Findlay Township, and current points leader, would move into second place with Schirnhofer (8) in third, John Mollick (60M) of Toronto, Ohio in fourth, and Jabo Jablonski (3J) of Carnegie in fifth. On the ensuing lap, Mollick (60M) would move into third, and Stoica (22J) would follow him into fourth, while Schirnhofer (8) would fall to fifth. The event’s second caution would come on lap three when Chris Lander (18) of Burgettstown spun out in turn four. The restart would have Beighey (36) still leading, Lamb (93X) in second, Mollick (60M) in third, Stoica (22J) in fourth, and Nico Dabecco moved into fifth. When the green flag dropped, Beighey (36) would continue to lead while Lamb (93X) fell to fourth, allowing Mollick (60M) and Stoica (22J) to move into second and third respectively. The third caution in four laps happened when Zarin (1Z) and Jablonski (3J) spun out together. On the restart Beighey (36) would lead the field with Mollick (60M) in second, Schirnhofer (8) in third, Stoica (22J) in fourth, and Lamb (93X) in fifth. Beighey (36) would contend with lapped traffic by the eleventh lap with Mollick (60M) on his rear bumper. Mollick (60M) would make many attempts to take the lead but Beighey (36) held his own against the seasoned vet and would lead the field to his first Diehl Automotive RUSH Late Model victory of his career at PPMS. Following him to the finish line were Mollick (60M) who was a close second, Lamb (93X) in third, Hall (01) in fourth, Stoica (22J) in fifth, Dabecco (F1) in sixth, Jablonski (3J) in seventh, Zarin (1Z) in eighth, D.J. Nakutis (31) in ninth, and Bill Kessler (09) would round out the top ten. Heat race winners were Schirnhofer (8) and Stoica (22J).

The Pro Stock 15-lap feature had Jason Fosnaught (73) of Tarentum on the pole with Martin Spade (18) starting to his outside in second. The second row consisted of Greg Beach (33X) of Chicora starting third, and Bill Robertson (1B) of Upper Saint Clair starting in fourth. By lap three, eighth starting and last weeks winner, Jeff Broniszewski (08) of Coraopolis had made his way up to second place behind Fosnaught (73). Lap seven had Fosnaught (73) still in the lead with Broniszewski (08) in tow, while Beach (33X) was in third, Dave McManus (114) of Elizabeth in fourth, and A.J. Poljak (36) of Baldwin in fifth. With Grumling (77X) leading at the halfway point, a three-way battle for second place was taking shape behind him in turns one and two between Kovacs (221K), DeBerdinis (121), and Ferree (29). Ferree (29) would win the second spot with Kovacs (221K) moving into third, and DeBerdinis (121) in fourth. With the checkered flag waving, Grumling (77X) would lead the field to his first career PPMS victory. He was followed to the line by Ferree (29) in second, Sheriff (8) in third, DeBerdinis (121) in fourth, Kovacs (221K) in fifth, B. Anton (13) in sixth, and E. Shlepman (17S) in seventh. Grumling (77X) also won the heat race.

In the Black Label Business Center Open 4’s 10-lap feature, Bill Tennant (2) of Colliers, West Virginia was the pole-sitter. Starting in second was April Tennant (95) of Colliers, West Virginia. The second row had Justin Clark (02) of Pittsburgh starting in third, and John Gill (19G) of Burgettstown in fourth, while Tom Anton (64) of Jefferson Hills started in fifth, and “The dominator” Andy Garlinger (R88) of Hopedale, Ohio round out the six-car field. When the green flag dropped, Garlinger (R88) shot like a rocket up to third by the first turn. B. Tennant (2) was leading the field on lap six when the event’s lone caution slowed the pace for T. Anton (64) who tagged the wall and did extensive right-side damage to his car. B. Tennant (2) chose the inside on the restart with A. Tennant (95) in second, and Garlinger (R88) in third. B. It was time to shine for Susie Rudolph (55) of Stubenville, Ohio in the six-lap Three Rivers Karting Young Guns feature. With a string of bad luck the past two weeks, Rudolph (55) started on the pole. Starting in second was Frank Magill (05) of Jefferson Hills, and starting in third was Kyle Janus (88) of Coraopolis. Lap three saw trouble when Janus (88) blew a right front tire, forcing him to enter the pits. It was Rudolph’s (55) night as she picked up her first career PPMS victory. She was followed by F. Magill (05) in second, and Janus (88) in third. Young Guns did not run a heat race.
