$16,000 OCRS Harold Leep Classic Format Unveiled
By John Lemon (Tulsa, OK) -- Last January, officials with the Oil Capital Racing Series announced a preview of the format to be used for the 4th Annual Harold Leep Classic presented by Carter - Maxwell. This special racing event from the AMERI-FLEX / OCRS sprint car series will be held at the 1/2-mile oval of the Thunderbird Speedway in Muskogee Oklahoma on June 22- 23. Today, officials are now releasing the format in full detail.
Time Trails, Heat Races & Qualifiers will be held on Friday June 22 with last chance qualifiers and the main event being held on Saturday June 23. Thunderbird Speedway will run complete programs with modified and stock car classes on both nights.
Friday's qualifying system to determine Saturday's feature starting positions and will be held in the following manner:
Time Trials:
Quick time driver earns 200 points. Second quick 198, third quick 196, fourth quick 194 with the balance of the field following the 2-point per position change. Drivers will draw for their order to time trial. Drivers must qualify within 3 places of their qualifying order to receive 2 laps on the clock. If for any reason a driver fails to do so, that driver will get one lap at the end of the line.
Heat Races (8-laps):
Winners earn 100 points, then 99, 98, 97, 96 and so on.
Fast qualifier from time trials will draw one of 3 numbered pills: 0, 2 or 3. The number drawn is the number of rows inverted in the heats based on the results of time trials. There are no passing points. Only finishing points.
Qualifiers (6-laps):
Winners earn 100 points, then 99, 98, 97, 96 and so on.
Field will be fully inverted from total points earned in time trials and heat races combined.
Points will be tabulated from all three qualifying systems.
The Top 12 in overall points will automatically lock into Saturday nights main event with the balance of the field placed into last chance races. The driver with the highest total number of points from Friday's program will draw one of three numbered pills: 0, 2 or 3. This will be the number of rows inverted for the main event. Drivers transferring from the last chance races will line straight up behind the 12 lock-ins according to their last chance finishes.
Payout:
The main event winner will earn $2,000 with the runner-up receiving $1,000. Third will earn $650, fourth $600 and $525 for fifth. Additional main event starters will receive a minimum of $400. The first 10 non-qualifiers will earn $250 each will the balance receiving $125 each.
$2500 in lap money will be on the line as well. The leader of each lap will earn $25 with $15 going to the second place car per lap. Drivers in the 3rd - 8th positions will earn $10 per lap. The winner could possibly earn a total of $2625 with lap money factored in. The least a driver could earn running in the top 8 for the entire race is $675.
The total payout with lap money based on a 30 car field is $16,000.
Drivers must compete both nights to qualify for this special pay scale. Any driver competing on day two only will start in the rear of the last chance race and earn the standard non sponsored single event pay scale.
