Runner-up finish in fourth round of DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia

On Monday evening Dale McDowell headed to Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Florida) for the 49th annual DIRTcar Nationals. In a field of 44 cars, McDowell followed up the third fastest time in his qualifying group with a 3rd place finish in his heat. The following night, Dale laid down the fastest time in his group before placing 2nd in his heat behind Brandon Overton. With $7,000 on the line in the feature, McDowell improved one spot to register a 7th place finish.

For the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series sanctioned program on Wednesday, McDowell grabbed the 3rd and final transfer spot in his heat which positioned him 16th on the starting grid for the $10,000-to-win A-Main. Coming one spot shy of a Top-10 finish, Dale gained five positions to score an 11th place outing.

On Thursday afternoon, Dale came in fourth fastest in his group before picking up an 8-lap heat race victory. Starting the $10,000-to-win A-Main fourth, McDowell improved two spots to place 2nd behind Jimmy Owens with Josh Richards, Jonathan Davenport, and Mike Marlar completing the Top-5 finishers.

After sitting out Friday night’s program due to recent rain, McDowell and another competitor tangled in his heat on Saturday while battling for the lead that dropped him back to a 7th place finish. Grabbing the 3rd and final transfer position in his B-Main, Dale locked into the 22nd-starting position for the finale. With $10,000 on the line, Dale McDowell made contact with the wall on lap 22 that forced him to retire early.
