SOUTHWEST SPRINT SEASON CONCLUDES THIS WEEKEND AT ARIZONA'S “WESTERN WORLD”
R.J. Johnson continues to solidify his hold on the 2016 USAC Southwest Sprint Car Championship, which would be his third in a row.
Johnson won Saturday night’s 30-lap “Spooktacular” race at Central Arizona Raceway in Casa Grande and takes a 121-point lead into this weekend’s 49th “Western World Championship” series season finales at Arizona Speedway in Queen Creek.
Johnson, of Tempe, Ariz., now has 39 career Southwest Sprint wins to his credit after recording his 10th point-paying victory of the 2016 campaign. He wheeled the Bill Michael Kodiak Products/Beal’s Auto Body Sherman/Ford to the win, leading the final 21 laps after passing C.J. Leary, who wound up second. Hard Charger Brady Short took third ahead of Tye Mihocko and Dennis Gile.3
Johnson should be among favorites at Queen Creek, having already scored four victories there this season. Stevie Sussex also has a pair of Queen Creek victories this year.
Brody Roa is the defending 360 Sprint Car "Western World" victor, winning last year's Saturday night feature at Tucson, Arizona's USA Raceway.
