Bump-and-run sends Scofield to victory lane

Bump-and-run sends Scofield to victory lane

By SCOTT LOCKWOOD
Desoto Speedway

Sarasota's Anthony Campi looked like he was in cruise for most of Saturday night's 75-lap Turner Tree and Landscape Super Late Model feature event at Desoto Speedway.

But a disasterous turn of events over the final nine laps that included a spin with a lapped car and a classic short track-bump-and-run with Jeff Scofield left Campi disappointed as he sat and watched Scofield celebrate his second Desoto win of the year."Losing like that is embarrassing," Campi said.Polesitter Joe Boyd paced the field for the first dozen laps of the event with Campi following in his tracks. After a spin by Tyler Scofield on lap 12, Campi passed Boyd on the outside for the lead and started pulling away from the rest of the field.Campi had a big lead when the caution flew for Chris Fontaine's flat tire on lap 28. He had another huge lead go by the wayside on lap 44 when the yellow came out again for Steve Gill's spin.
Boyd pulled his car into the pits during the yellow, moving Jeff Scofield to second and fast-qualifier Jesse Dutilly, who was looking for his third straight win at Desoto, to third. Campi set sail on the field and appeared to be cruising toward the win when contact with Gene Anderson's lapped machine sent him spinning into the infield in turn four. Officials ruled that Anderson was at fault for the spin, which allowed Campi to stay up front.
Scofield started on Campi's outside on the final restart. After Campi cleared Scofield heading onto the backstretch, Scofield made slight contact with Campi going into turn three. That caused Campi to chase his car up the banking and sent Scofield to the lead.
Campi fell to third after the contact behind Scofield and Dutilly. He eventually got back by for second, but ran out of time to catch Scofield as he collected his second win of the year at Desoto.
Dutilly finished third, with Dylan Bigley and Bill Bigley Jr. rounding out the top five.
The Joey Coulter Florida Pro Truck series was also on hand for a 50-lap feature event. Polesitter Nick Hernandez of Bradenton paced the field for the first seven laps. As the field completed the eighth lap Becca Monopoli passed Hernandez for the lead.
Immediately behind them Steve Darvalics and Danny Anderson got together on the front stretch, sending Anderson, winner of the last couple of Pro Truck races at Desoto Speedway, into the wall and out of the race.
Monopoli and Hernandez staged a side-by-side battle for the lead for several laps after the restart. Monopoli wrestled the lead from Hernandez on lap 16. Hernandez retook the lead two laps later and spent the next 10 laps up front with Dylan Martin, Darvalics and Monopoli right on his tail.
On the ensuing restart Martin got by Hernandez for the lead. He started pulling away and successfully worked his way through lapped traffic in the closing laps to collect his first win at Desoto this year. Hernandez, Darvalics, Monopoli and Chad Chastain rounded out the top five.
In other action Saturday night, Jimmy Best took the win in the Rookie 4 feature; Jimmie Best won the LKQ Pick Your Part Pure Stock feature; In the Mini Stock feature race winner was Randy Johnson followed by Ronnie Robinson and Cameron Cruse third.
Donnie Duchesne passed Doug Lecornea on the final lap to take the Race Cars of Yesteryear feature; Ander Jackson won the Sunbelt Rentals of Fort Myers Street Stock main event; and Brandon Duchscherer won the 20-lap bomber feature.
The Take Aim Gun Range Sportsmen, J.D. Byrider Open Wheel Modifieds and a 50-lap Pro Late Model feature highlight next Saturday's action at Desoto Speedway.
