Inside Line Promotions – WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (June 28, 2018) – Brandon Hanks made his first trip on an airplane on Thursday morning when he began his trek west for an opportunity to race the Firecracker Shootout this weekend.

“The guy I sat next to is in the Air Force and he got a kick out of my reactions whenever the airplane would shift left or right,” he said. “We had a good bit of turbulence landing. I’m not sure this airplane stuff is for me.”

Hanks will pilot a 305ci winged sprint car for Scott Brown and Terry Steward this Friday and Saturday at West Texas Raceway in Lubbock, Texas, during the event.

“They’ve got a good car,” Hanks said. “I really don’t know what to expect, but I don’t see why I couldn’t compete for a win. Working with different people changes things up. Hopefully I can learn and we’ll gel together quickly and we can battle for a win or two this weekend. I’m very grateful for the opportunity.”

It will be the debut at the oval for Hanks, who only has five career starts in a 305 sprint car under his belt. Fortunately, Hanks made his first 305ci winged sprint car start in approximately two years last Saturday at Riverside International Speedway, where he drove for Cody Miller.

“I’ve known of him for a while, but hadn’t met him,” Hanks said. “I found out Friday night he had a car and might have been looking for a driver. My dad called Paul Sides Saturday morning and Paul got ahold of Cody, who called me and asked if I wanted to drive it. I was like, ‘Heck yeah.’ Brian Bell was the last one to drive it and he’s a pretty tall guy so it felt like I was sitting on the floor. I could see where I was going, but I normally like to see better than that. It was weird driving a 305 again, but I enjoyed myself.”

Hanks finished fourth in a heat race before capping the night by advancing from 10th to seventh place in the main event.

“The car was pretty tight,” he said. “You can’t pull yourself out of trouble in a 305. If I’d been running second or third I might have pushed harder, but I took what the car gave me. We had a good run. I ran sixth most of the race, but I caught a lapped car wrong going into turn one and we fell back to seventh.

“I want to thank Cody for the opportunity. He was really happy how we did. That was his first night out this year. I think we’ll try it again and hopefully we can do better next time.”
