Heartbreak Hotel at National Open for Zearfoss and Destiny Motorsports

PETERSEN MEDIA: In one of the biggest races in Central PA, Brock Zearfoss and Destiny Motorsports went toe-to-toe with the hottest team in the state during the National Open on Saturday night until incident contact ended the team’s night while battling for the lead at Williams Grove Speedway.

“Friday night we started off with some minor engine issues that put us behind, but after working those kinks out we got off to a great start on Saturday night and had a great shot to win the National Open,” Brock Zearfoss said.

Getting off to a little bit of a slow start as they fought gremlins on Friday night, Zearfoss timed the MonDak Portables/Ft Union Supply and Trading/Moose’s LZ Bar and Grill machine in 13th quickest in their time trial group before running fourth in the heat race.

On a normal night that would be good enough for a transfer but with the car count on hand, fourth would place Zearfoss in the semi where he would end his night with an 11th place finish.

Making some adjustments during the day Saturday, Zearfoss came out swinging with the bright lights on as he timed the Heavy Equipment Loaders and Parts/Berkebile Oil Company/BAPS entry in seventh quickest in his time trial group on this night.

Going from third to second in his heat race, the ‘Jonestown Jet’ would move into the Dash where he would fend off Friday night’s winner, Gio Scelzi and earn the pole position for the National Open.

When the green flag dropped, Zearfoss stomped on the loud pedal and jumped out to the early lead as PA legend, Lance Dewease chased after him. Looking good out front, Zearfoss would get into traffic quickly and allow Dewease to close in on his rear bumper.

As Dewease made a bid for the lead, Zearfoss was able to point his car underneath Dewease and continue to lead before the caution flag flew on the 12th lap.

Getting the jump, Zearfoss continued to lead the way as he chased after Destiny Motorsports first World of Outlaws win ever and first win of the season, but a pesky Dewease had other ideas.

Racing down the backstretch on the 24th lap, Dewease would get the advantage and take over the top spot before a lap 25 competition yellow flew.

The ensuing restart would see contact between the two leaders appear to be harmless. Chasing after Dewease, the contact would prove to not be harmless as front end issues would result in Zearfoss spinning and sliding up into the wall ending his night.

“It was a heartbreaker for sure,” Zearfoss said. “I wanted to win that race for Greg Hodnett so badly. On the flip side, it was great to have that good of speed and really have something for the No. 69K (Dewease). Those guys are on their game in Central PA, so you know you’re doing something right when you’re battling with them. I am really proud of the effort Shane, Kevin, and Mike put in, and for everyone that is involved. It takes more than just a few people to make this deal work.”

Destiny Motorsports would like to thank MonDak Portables, Ft. Union Supply and Trading, Moose’s LZ Bar and Grill, Heavy Equipment Loaders and Parts, Berkebile Oil Company, BAPS Auto Paint and Supply, Meckleys Limestone, Champion Brand Lubricants, All Star Performance, KSE Racing Products, HRP, Wilwood, Keizer Wheels, Simpson, Petersen Media, My Race Pass, FK Rod Ends, Boss Signs and Graphics, Classic Ink, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, C&H Veteran Enterprises, and Hoosier Tires North for their continued support.
