Scotty Thiel – Scores a Top 5 and Top 10 on Doubleheader Weekend with IRA!
Scotty Thiel and the STM #64 team headed out this weekend for a doubleheader with the IRA Sprint Car Series. The first stop was at the Dodge County Fairgrounds in Beaver Dam on Friday night where Thiel would have to overcome a mishap in qualifying but charged his way to a fourth place finish. Saturday night the team headed south to the Fairbury American Legion Speedway in Fairbury, IL. Scotty would start out the night strong in qualifying and went on to lead some of the main event but a midrace tangle would set him back and finished in the seventh position.
23 cars signed into Dodge County on Friday night. Scotty would go out 8th in the qualifying order. He jumped the cushion coming out of turn four on lap one which upset the car fiercely but he saved it from getting into the wall. Unfortunately, that would cost him a ton of speed to start the second lap and the final result would be 13th quick on the night. That would place him to start 5th in heat race action. A heat race win would allow him to be in the redraw. The field took the green and Scotty charged hard going into turn one and two. He drifted up the track and got into the marbles up top which made him drop back a spot but he quickly made up for that going into turn three. He made his way back into the third position and would go on to slide his way into the second position a few laps later. He would end up finishing second in the heat race. That finish would place him to start in the 12th position for the nights 25 lap A-main event. The field took the green for the main event and Thiel began his charge forward right away. He picked up a few spots in the first few laps and several cautions along the way helped as the field would get bunched back up. Scotty would find himself in the top five at the halfway point of the event. A late race pass would get him into the fourth position with a few laps remaining. He was right on the bumper of the third place car but was not able to find a way around before the checkered flag flew. “Tonight wasn’t all that bad considering how it started out. I scared myself there a little in qualifying after jumping the cushion and almost hitting the wall. 12th to 4th was pretty good. Needed a couple more cautions or a few more laps and I think we could have been up a few more spots.” Scotty explained after the race.
The team headed south for Saturday’s event which took place at Fairbury American Legion Speedway in Fairbury, IL. 40 cars signed into the pits. Scotty was the fourth car out to qualify and would put down the second quickest lap of the night. That would place him to start fourth in the heat race event. After working the high side of the track in the heat race he would end up finishing in the second position. Thiel would draw the #4 starting position for the nights 30 lap main event. The field took the green flag for the main event. Scotty drove his way into the second position in the first corner and pulled alongside the leader out of turn two. He was unable to make the pass and settled back into the second position. On lap five he would go on to battle for the lead and take full command of the lead one lap later. He lead for several laps and began to enter into heavy lap traffic. Trying to get around a lap car he began to work the middle of the track but lost ground and got passed. He moved back up to the top side of the track but would end up getting into a lap car who drove up the track coming out of turn four. Thiel would restart in the third position but had a few things broke on the car which made it difficult to get any forward drive. He fell back to the seventh position and would end up finishing there after 30 laps were complete. “Tonight was starting off really good but ended in a frustrating way. We had a fast car all night and I thought once we got into the lead we would be good. Lap traffic was very tough and I lost a lot of ground trying to get around some of them. It makes it tough when they are trying to race with the leaders. We fell back and then ended up getting tangled with one guy. I got into the wall a little and that broke the Jacobs ladder and I think the front end got beat up a little. It just didn’t drive right after that caution. Disappointed for my team as we worked hard to get this far tonight and have the results we did.” Thiel said after the main.
Next on tap for the STM team will be in two weeks on July 21st at the Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, WI.

Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE). This is good, but can be hard to understand. We simplify this process. The numbering system we use is standard to the torsion bar industries. During our test sessions, data is collected and stored in our software, which then calculates it to a torsion bar size that everyone can understand. We have found 1025 bars that test between a 1012 and a 1036 bar. Our test services take away the guesswork. We provide you with a TORSION BAR RATE. Check out www.torsionbarrate.com for more info!
