Scotty Thiel – Top 5 Top 10 Weekend in Iowa & Minnesota
A struggling few weeks for the Scott Thiel Motorsports team wouldn’t damper their western swing trip with the IRA Series this past weekend. The team traveled Friday to the Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer, IA and followed that up with a visit to Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, MN on Saturday. Driver, Scotty Thiel was able to get back into rhyme and earn another top five finish on Friday night and would end up with a top 10 on Saturday with a mangled up car.
20 cars signed into the IRA portion on Friday night in Clay County. Scotty was the fifth car out to qualify. The track began to get pretty slick as the qualifying runs started. Scotty tried a different line in turn two that maybe costed him a spot or two but ended up 7th quick overall. That placed him to start on the pole of the heat race event. At the drop of the green, Thiel would take command of the race and never look back and take home the heat race victory and a spot in the redraw. He would go on to draw the outside front row starting position for the nights 25 lap A-main event. The field would go on to take the green for the main event. Thiel jumped out to the early lead and work the top side of the track. The bottom of turn one and two became quick as the race went on and Thiel would slip back to the second position but began to follow the leader through that corner. He maintained that position for several laps before a restart would occur. Scotty charged hard back into turn one but would lose a spot off of turn two as the engine stumbled as he got back on the throttle. He would hold onto the third position until the final laps when he would get passed for the third spot but was unable to gain the spot back at the end of lap 25. He would go on to finish in the fourth spot. “We’ll take it!” Thiel said. “The last few races have been not so good for our team and this was just a positive step in the right direction.”
Saturday night brought the team to Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, MN. 32 cars were on hand and Thiel would go out 13th to qualify. They worked on some fueling concerns from the previous night which loaded the motor full of fuel and ended up with a not so good qualifying attempt of 25th. That would place Scotty to start 7th in the heat race event. He would rebound in the heat race as he charged his way to a solid third place finish. That finish would place him to start 14th in the 30 lap main event. The 24 car field took the green flag. Scotty worked the top side of the track early on and would grab a few spots in the opening laps of the race. A few cautions and a red flag early on in the event would spot and regroup the field. Scotty noticed during the red flag that his wing slider was broke which would make the wing go as far back as it could during the race as the speed of the cars pushed the wing back. That would make the car be very tight in the corners. The field went back to green flag action and Thiel had to deal with the wing issue. It made the car a little upset at times but he managed to keep moving forward. On lap 24, thiel would get crossed up in turn two as he was avoiding a car that was beginning to flip after making contact with the wall. Scotty would end up getting hit in the front of the car and the red flag flew. The front axle and shocks were good on the car but the nose wing was mangled up. Thiel would restart at the tail end of the lead lap cars with just six laps to go. The green was back out and Scotty began to work his way forward. He would end up driving his way back to the 10th spot as the checkered flag flew. “Tonight could have been worse I guess.” Thiel explained. “I think we were battling inside the top ten when we got into that pile up in turn two. Our car was actually pretty good all night even with the wing flying back all the time but just would have been nice to keep running where we were. I think we could have ended up a lot better.”
Next on tap for the STM Team is another double header this weekend starting of Saturday night at the Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, WI and following that up with a trip Sunday to LaSalle Speedway in LaSalle, IL

Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE). This is good, but can be hard to understand. We simplify this process. The numbering system we use is standard to the torsion bar industries. During our test sessions, data is collected and stored in our software, which then calculates it to a torsion bar size that everyone can understand. We have found 1025 bars that test between a 1012 and a 1036 bar. Our test services take away the guesswork. We provide you with a TORSION BAR RATE. Check out www.torsionbarrate.com for more info!
