Ryan Unzicker Rebounds for MARS Victory at I-55 Federated Raceway
Ryan Unzicker turned his weekend around in a big way, scoring a MARS Championship Series victory on Saturday night at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55. He piloted his RJR Transportation / Brucker Farms No. 24 Longhorn Chassis Late Model to his second win of the season.
"It took every ounce of energy out of every race car driver out here tonight, to fight the track," Unzicker said, thanking his crew and sponsors. "I really can't even feel my darn arms right now ... the car was just really balanced, we made some changes we needed to make for this kind of track and right there starting up front was the perfect point to get the win and getting the job done."
Unzicker entered the weekend leading the MARS point standings, but transmission trouble derailed his run during Friday’s Jr. Kimler Memorial at Farmer City Raceway. After advancing into the $5,000-to-win feature through a B-Main, his night ended early on lap 14 due to the mechanical issue.
At I-55 on Saturday, Unzicker secured a transfer spot with a strong heat performance, charging from fourth to second. Rolling off from the fifth position in the 30-lap main event, he surged to the lead on lap 21 and controlled the final 10 circuits to pocket the $5,000 payday.
The triumph marked Unzicker’s 13th career MARS Championship Series victory.
Due to weather, Sunday’s program at Quincy Raceway was been postponed to September 14.
Unzicker currently sits second in the latest series point standings.
