Fifth-place finish in One for the Road at Fairbury Speedway

Ryan Unzicker made the short trip to Fairbury Speedway on Wednesday as the FloRacing Night in America miniseries' One for the Road event opened the 35th annual Prairie Dirt Classic weekend.

With 66 of the nation’s top Late Model competitors signed in, Unzicker led his 33-car qualifying group and went on to win his heat race. Lined up in the feature with a $20,000 payday on the line, he capped off the night with a strong fifth-place finish in the 50-lap A-Main, trailing only Bobby Pierce, Ricky Thornton Jr., Jonathan Davenport, and Hudson O’Neal at the checkered flag.

By Friday, the field swelled to 78 cars as the World of Outlaws Real American Beer Late Model Series officially launched Prairie Dirt Classic weekend. Unzicker’s qualifying performance slotted him into the fifth row for his 25-lap preliminary feature, where he finished ninth. The result shifted his focus to Saturday’s Last Chance Showdown as he looked to race his way into the main event.

On Saturday, Unzicker narrowly missed a transfer spot in his B-Main by a single position but bounced back by winning the Prairie Dirt Shootout. Faced with the option to pocket the $3,500 payday or start from the tail of the $50,000-to-win Prairie Dirt Classic, he tore up the check and elected to join the field. Unfortunately, his bid ended prematurely on lap 57.
