Cappello Continues Hot Streak with Rocky Mountain Win
26 Promotions – West Valley City, UT – (July 25th, 2017) – Dylan Cappello entered this past weekend’s Lucas Oil Modified Series race at Rocky Mountain Raceways on a two-race winning streak and right back in the thick of the championship hunt. The Hitman left Rocky Mountain Raceways with his third consecutive trip to victory lane and is now only twenty-three points back in the championship standings.
Cappello’s weekend kicked off on Friday with a long four-hour practice session.
“Rolling into practice Friday we began with a quick run on older tires to gauge the overall balance of the car,” Cappello explained. “We struggled finding stability on the entry of the corner and made multiple changes to address this problem.”
After a couple scuff runs and a mock qualifying run, Cappello found himself on the top of the board to close out Friday’s practice session.
Cappello debriefed with his team following Friday night’s practice and felt confident heading into Saturday’s race.
“Thinking of a couple changes that we might have overlooked, I was very optimistic heading into race day,” said Cappello. “I knew that as a team, we could get the car good enough to contend for the win.”
Feeling good about the car after the first practice session, the team made the decision to sit out final practice and prepare for qualifying.
Cappello qualified third quick with a lap of 15.359.
“In qualifying, I think we missed with a combination of setup and driver error,” he said. “I left a little bit on the table when I decided to take a lower line in turns three and four. But, our third-place effort was good enough to put us in contention for the invert.”
Next up for Cappello was the Quick Six Dash, where Cappello started fourth and climbed his way up to a second-place finish in the six-lap race.
“We made yet another change to the car to tighten it up prior to the trophy dash,” he said. “This gave us an idea of what the car needed to stay under me for seventy-five laps.”
The four car inversion worked out perfectly for Cappello, lining him up on the front row for the start of the feature.
“Starting on the outside of the front row was a great place to be with a preferred outside line,” said Cappello. “The race went green and I was clear by the backstretch. We had a similar game plan to Kern, where we wanted a ten-car length gap and then settle in to save tires.”
Unfortunately for Cappello, Jason Irwin had a different game plan and began to close in on Cappello about twenty-laps into the race as he was closing in on heavy lap traffic.
“The next obstacle was navigating through these slower cars that were sometimes two wide leaving me nowhere to go,” he said. “It got very close a couple times, but we eventually started racking up a nice cushion once again.”
From there it was all Cappello, who began to pick up the pace with twenty laps to go. Cappello went on to lead all seventy-five laps for the third race in a row, crossing the finish line with over a 4 and a half second lead.
“This team is so awesome and I can’t believe the amount of drive we all have to win these races,” said Cappello. “We have found a good recipe and we will keep showing up to the track ready to execute.”
Next up for Cappello is a trip to Irwindale Speedway in California on August 19th.
Dylan Cappello would like to thank Ram Mounts, Arizona Garage Doors, Spray Nine, Driven Motorsports, Team RBK, Pro Power Racing Engines, Total Power Batteries, Roger Seymour Photography, and Bilstein Shocks for their continued support.
