SPENCER, Iowa – For the previous three years, Trey Thesenvitz has made his name known at Clay County Speedway with strong showings in the supporting micro sprint class when the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series comes to town in mid-September. A fifth-place finish in just his third micro sprint race of his career started off that list, then a feature win came at the Spencer, IA facility in 2012 after starting seventh. Last year, Thesenvitz started near the back of the field and put on a passing clinic, earning hard charger honors and coming home in the fourth spot. This year, he’d look to keep his streak of top-fives alive and hopefully repeat his 2012 performance with another trophy.

The Jasper, MN wheelman reported that the car was extremely fast in hot laps, and backed that up in his six-lap heat race with a second-place finish from inside of row three on the starting grid. Thesenvitz nearly caught the leader on the last lap, in spite of having a lightly damaged front axle from slight contact with an infield tire coming off turn four to take the white flag.

The lineup for the fifteen-lap micro sprint A-main slated the #53 Sawyer/Yamaha entry to roll off P7. Thesenvitz attempted to gain as much ground as he could on the start, but managed to pass just one car on lap one. However, the sixteen-year-old stayed calm and proceeded to pick off sixth, fifth, and fourth, taking two or three laps to make each move. The race went without a caution until lap eleven, when Thesenvitz was running in the third spot. The upcoming restart would be the most important factor in where the top three cars would finish. When the green reemerged, Thesenvitz timed the start perfectly, and got to second, refocusing his efforts on the leader, who had opened up a decent gap. The process of reeling the leader back in took three laps, and they were bumper-to-bumper off of turn two. A drag race into turn three saw Thesenvitz move to the inside, but he didn’t have quite enough room to make the pass. He’d settle for second off of turn four and over the line, capping his fourth top-five finish at the speedway in four attempts. “I was under him going into three,” he pointed out, “and had to lift or wreck us both.” The seventh-to-second run captured the title of “hard charger” for the second straight year.

Thesenvitz would like to thank MerchLane, Performance One, Speedshack Performance, and Kustom Colors as well as his family, his crew chief Scuba Steve, and all of his great fans for their continued support.

Thesenvitz next plans to compete on September 19 at Raceway Park in Jefferson, SD, and on September 20 at Nobles County Speedway in Worthington, MN, both in the #53 600cc micro sprint entry.
