BRANDON, S.D. – For the last time in 2014, Jasper, MN’s Trey Thesenvitz was in action at Huset’s Speedway in Brandon, SD on Sunday night. The point standings were extremely tight going into the final points race of the season, with Thesenvitz only 2 points behind third place.
When the motor cut out on occasion in hot laps, the team went to work to get the #53 Sawyer/Yamaha ready for the heat race. The issues were quickly resolved, and Thesenvitz drove from his fifth starting spot in the first heat race to a third place finish.
Third in the heat would be good enough to qualify him for the feature lineup invert. The invert put him in the seventh starting spot, with his competition in the points race, Greg Gunderson, starting sixth. This meant that whoever finished higher of the two in the feature race would take the last step on the podium of the points battle. At the drop of the green, the dominance of the middle groove was quickly evident, as the outside row was much quicker than the inside row. Due to this, Thesenvitz would fall to eighth, seemingly battling engine issues once again. However, he'd make the pass back for seventh on lap two before losing the spot again (albeit to a different driver) before the completion of the lap. He would run in the eighth position for nearly all the race while the field started to stretch out, as is common at the high-banked 1/3 mile. Coming to take the white flag, Thesenvitz made his way back into seventh, and would complete the race there in the green-to-checkered affair. It was discovered that a spark plug had begun to foul out, causing the engine to not run at peak performance. Unfortunately, this caused the points battle to go uncontested, as Gunderson picked up three spots on the start and another late in the race to finish second. Thesenvitz took home fourth in Huset’s Speedway points, finishing the season at the track with 2 wins, 6 top fives, 10 top tens, and 3 DNFs in 13 feature events.
Thesenvitz would like to thank MerchLane, Performance One, and Speedshack Performance, as well as his family, his crew chief Scuba Steve, and all of his great fans for their continued support.
Thesenvitz next plans to compete on September 12 at the Clay County Fair in Spencer, IA, as the micro sprints have been brought on to support the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series show, and on September 13 in Knoxville, IA, for English Creek Speedway’s “Micro Short Track Nationals,” both in the #53 600cc micro sprint entry.
