Kerry Madsen Highlights National Open With Top 10 During Opening Night

Inside Line Promotions – MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 5, 2020) – Kerry Madsen captured his 18th top 10 of the season with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series last Friday during the opening night of the 58th annual Champion Racing Oil National Open.

Madsen’s 10th-place finish at Williams Grove Speedway gave the Killer Instinct Crossbows sponsored Big Game Motorsports team its 13th top 10 in the last 14 starts with ‘The Greatest Show on Dirt.’

“We were pretty good, but just missed starting on the front row in the heat race both nights,” he said. “We were really close, but not close enough.”

Madsen qualified fifth quickest in his group to miss the front row of a heat race by only one position. He started and finished third in his heat.

“We were solid in the heat race on Friday night and ran third,” he said. “I started ninth in the feature and we had a strong race car. We were always at the bumper of the car in front, but couldn’t make the moves to gain a few more spots.”

Madsen’s 10th-place run was his 38th overall top 10 this year.

The National Open concluded on Saturday with Madsen qualifying eighth quickest in his group. He lined up fourth in a heat race, but quickly moved forward.

“I had a really good car in the heat and should have got ourselves in a dash,” he said. “The front wing got knocked off on the back straightaway at Lap 3 or Lap 4. At that point it was put the top wing all the way forward and try to figure out a way to not get passed. We ended up fourth, which was hard to do. Realistically if you’re going to have a shot to win you have to be in the dash.”

Madsen’s fourth-place result in the heat race lined him up on the inside of the eighth row for the A Main.

“We threw a Hail Mary at it and weren’t very good in the A Main,” he said. “We were too tight. It wasn’t until about 15 laps into the A Main our car came alive. It wasn’t the result we were looking for, but that happens sometimes at Williams Grove.”

Madsen finished 20th.

The team plans on joining the World of Outlaws this Friday and Saturday at Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, Pa., for the Nittany Showdown. Madsen has visited the track five times this year with a season-best run of second place last month.

“I’m feeling good about going there,” he said. “We’ve had a few good runs there and have had our package good. It’s an Outlaws race so you need to qualify well. Then hopefully we can expand upon the progress we’ve made and run up front.”
