LEE, N.H. - For the first hundred laps of Friday night’s Iron Sight 125, Joey Doiron had his aim squarely on the top spot. It was just a question of when to pull the trigger.
Only a few laps later, Doiron took the winning shot.
The two-time Granite State Pro Stock Series champion from Berwick, Me. outdueled Jimmy Renfrew, Jr. and held off Mike Hopkins’ late charge to score his first GSPSS win of the season, capping off Lee USA Speedway’s Mid-Summer Shootout.
Renfrew earned the pole following a post-qualifying redraw, but Doiron started the 125-lap main event to his outside. A close call on the start shuffled Doiron back to fourth, but the veteran quickly regained his composure and got to work.
An early spin set the stage for a lap-9 restart that quickly turned chaotic, with a number of pre-race favorites taking damage in the conflagration. Evan Beaulieu and Eddie MacDonald took the brunt of the damage, with Beaulieu’s title hopes taking a big hit.
Doiron diced to second on the restart, breaking away from the pack with Renfrew ahead while Hopkins settled into third. A spin on lap 57 bunched up the leaders, but once again, Renfrew and Doiron were the class of the field while Gabe Brown tested Hopkins for third.
With the laps winding down, Doiron reeled in Renfrew, who was gunning for his first GSPSS win since 2022. With Renfrew covering the inside at every turn, Doiron peeked to Renfrew’s outside on lap 101. Renfrew threw a block, clipping Doiron’s nose and forcing Doiron up to the outside wall.
Undeterred, Doiron stayed tight to Renfrew’s bumper. Two laps later, Doiron made his own move, unseating Renfrew to take the lead with Hopkins in tow. As Hopkins went to work on Renfrew, Doiron pulled away from the runner-up battle.
Hopkins quickly cleared Renfrew for second, but there were not enough laps left to close the gap on Doiron, who cruised to his eighth career GSPSS win and his first since last May.
Following Hopkins across the line in third was Brown, who earned his first GSPSS podium finish since 2022. Two-time Lee USA Speedway track champion Brandon Barker was fourth, with Nick Cusack rounding out the top five. Renfrew, who led the most laps on the night, slid back to eighth at the finish.
Doiron, the 2019 and 2022 GSPSS titlist, now leads the series in wins at Lee with three, breaking a six-way tie. He now moves into a three-way tie for second on the series’ all-time win list.
On a tough night for points contenders, points leader Cole Robie was best in class with an 11th-place run. Misfortune for defending champion Casey Call and Cory Casagrande reduced second-place Beaulieu’s losses in the standings, but the family team from Maine has a long road ahead just to be race-ready for the next event on the schedule.
The Granite State Pro Stock Series schedule continues next Saturday, August 2, as the summer stretch run winds down with 100 laps around Riverside Speedway in Groveton, N.H. With fresh pavement on the high-banked quarter-mile, “Grovetona” could open the gates for another first-time winner.
